Paddy Donovan and Jordan Myers advanced to the quarter-finals of the European Youth Championships in Antalya,Turkey today.
The Limerick and Sligo pair beat Slovenia’s Tomi Lorencic and Israel’s Zav Yan in the light-welter and middle classes.
Lorencic took three standing counts versus Donovan, with the ref waving it off in the third. The Treaty City southpaw will face Turkey’s Tugrulhan Erdemir in a repeat of the 2015 World Junior final, which the Turk edged in Russia, on Wednesday.
Myers, embroiled in his second all out war in 24 hours, beat Yan in another slug fest in the 75kg class.
The 2013 European Schoolboy champion meets Serbia’s Djozdic Buksic for at least bronze in his next fight.
The four remaining Irish boxers – Donovan, Myers, Joyce and Dossen – in Antalya are through to the quarter-finals. Any victory for Ireland from here on in will guarantee at least bronze.
Zaur Antia and John Conlan are working Ireland’s corner at the 27th edition of the European Youths.
