IRELAND’S top prospects recorded three wins from four at the European Youths in Antalya,Turkey today.
David Oliver Joyce, Gabriel Dossen and Jordan Myers advanced deeper into the tournament following impressive victories.
Terry Donoghue was unlucky not to progress. The St MIchael’s Athy man more than matched Danil Lysenko, a favourite for gold, all the way but the Russian light-fly got the decision following a cracking bout.
Joyce never took his foot of the pedal and maintained his intensity in all three rounds to book his ticket to within one win of at least bronze versus Azeri flyweight Amid Alizada in a fine performance, while Dossen recorded his second win in 24 hours against Olek Kravets of the Ukraine, the Galway southpaw once again showing his class and using his jab to maximum effect to keep his talented opponent at bay.
Myers beat Bulgaria’s Rami Kiwan in a proverbial slug-fest. Both young men basically went at each other hammer and thongs from opening to closing bell – but Myers’ relentless pursuit of his opponent, and bigger shots off both hands, took the decision.
