Ireland recorded four wins from four on the opeing day of the Queens Cup in Stralsund, Germany this afternoon.

Caitlyn Fryers, Shauna O’Callaghan, Joanne Richards and Mary Geraghty had their hands raised in victory against Germany, Poland and Finland following impressive displays.

Irish team manager Bernie Harlod hailed today’s performances.

“The German was relentless in attack but a technically strong response won the nod from the judges for the Irish bantamweight, she said.

“The atmosphere in the Phoenix Sportsclub in Stralsund was electric with the Irish and German supporters trying to out sing each other to support their boxer. Mary Geraghty next meets Johanna Wonyou of France who outpointed her Finnish opponent today.

“All of the girls performed very well today. They all followed the instructions of their coaches and it’s a great start to the tournament.”

Niamh Fay and Kayleigh Woods, representing the Bracken and Kildare boxing clubs, lost out to Joulina Suhron of Germany and Denista Pauerová of the Czech Republic this afternoon despite big performances.
