FRANCE CLAIMS WOMEN’S OLYMPIC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

France’s Estelle Mossely claimed the women’s Olympic lightweight title at Rio 2016 tonight.The current World champion came from behind after losing the first two rounds to beat China’s Junhua Yin after getting the nod on a split decision.

Katie Taylor was the first woman to win the Olympic 60kg title in London four years ago.

Uzbekistan’s Shakhobidin Zoirov,who beat Brendan Irvine in the preliminaries in Rio,upgraded his guaranteed bronze to at least silver tonight and big Joe Joyce of Great Britain beat Kazakhstan’s Ivan Dychko to book his ticket into the super-heavy final versus France’s Tony Yoka.

Joyce and Dychko trained with Team Ireland in Dublin this summer.

Claresa Shields of the USA is one win away from retaining her Olympic middleweight title. She’ll meet Holland’s Nouchka Fontijn,who was beaten by Cork’s Christina Desmond earlier this year, in the 75kg gold medal match after both women won tonight.
