IRELAND ASSURED OF TWO BRONZE AT WORLD YOUTHS
Katelynn Phelan guaranteed Ireland a first bronze medal at the World Women’s Youth Championships in Guwahati, India after a thrilling win over Aidyl Cardenas this morning.
The Kildare light-welter beat the American in the 64kg quarter-final to book her ticket into the last-four.
Proud dad, Paddy Phelan, coach at the St Brigid’s BC, was at ringside to watch his daughter advance to the semi-finals.
Caitlin Fryers added a second bronze to the collection after a well-deserved win over Russia’s Karina Tuvakova this afternoon.
The Belfast light-fly, who has claimed three wins in India this week, beat the 2015 World Junior bronze medallist on a split decision.
Shannon Reilly was aiming to make it a hat-trick for Ireland in the welter class.
But the Irish welter, despite another massive performance, was outpointed by Citalli Ortiz of the USA.
Irish team manager Anna Moore described the performances of the Irish trio as magnificent.
Tomorrow is a rest day at the tournament with the semi-finals due to be decided on Friday and Saturday. The finals will be held Sunday.
