Katelynn Phelan guaranteed Ireland at least one bronze medal at the World Women’s Youth Championships in Guwahati, India after a thrilling win over Aidyl Cardenas this morning.
The Kildare light-welter beat the California-born orthodox on a split decision in the 64kg quarter-final to book her ticket into the last-four.
Proud dad, Paddy Phelan, coach at the St Brigid’s BC, was at ringside to watch his daughter advance.
Team manager Anna Moore hailed Phelan’s performance.
“She was absolutely outstanding and dominated from start to finish. We’re thrilled with the win,” she said.
Caitlin Fryers and Shannon Reilly will be aiming to add to Ireland’s medal haul in the afternoon session.
