The Irish Athletic Boxing Association have named a ten-strong squad for next month’s European U/22 Championships in Brăila, Romania.

The squad – which contains nine of the ten champions from the recent National U/22 Championships – are currently training at the Irish Institute of Sport in Abbotstown.

The team leave for Brăila on March 13th.

“The squad are preparing very well and they are happy, that is the main thing, said Irish head coach Zaur Antia who confirmed that U/22 champion John Maughan has picked up an injury and has been replaced by Eugene McKeever at welterweight.

“Some of the team are competing in the Elites Championships which is good preparation in itself for the Europeans in Romania” added Ireland’s chief seconds who will be working the Irish corner in Brăil with Dmitry Dimitruck and Jimmy Halpin.

The European U/22 Championships are returning after a five-year absence this year. At the previous tournament  – and only European U/22 Championships so far – in 2012, Jason Quigley and Hughie Myres won gold and silver for Ireland in Russia.
