IRVINE AND MCGIVERN INTO LAST-EIGHT AT COMMONWEALTHS

Brendan Irvine

Brendan Irvine and James McGivern cruised into the last-eight of the Commonwealths Games in Gold Coast, Australia earlier today.

The Antrim duo beat Jabah Breedy of Barbados and Zambia’s Emanuel Ngoma in the fly and light classes.

Irvine recorded a unanimous decision over Breedy and McGivern, a Commonwealth Youth champion, stopped  Ngoma in the second round.

Both men will be back in action in the quarter-finals on Wednesday one win away from at least bronze.

Kristina O’Hara guaranteed Northern Ireland its first bronze yesterday.

Kurt Walker, Dee Sullivan and Stephen McMonagle are between the ropes tomorrow in the last-eight.

Brother and sister pair, Michaela and Aidan Walsh, are also in quarter-final action Tuesday one win each away from an historic double.

Speaking after today’s victory, McGivern, an 11-time Irish champion, said his objective was lightweight gold.
