NATIONAL U/18 C’SHIPS RESUME TONIGHT

The National U/18 Championships will be decided over 37 semi-finals and finals at Dublin’s National Stadium this Friday and Saturday.

The tournament resumes Friday at the home of Olympic, World and European medallists. Seventeen last-four bouts are down for decision.

Catherine Blaney and Lauren Dempsey meet in the 57kg decider in the third bout on the program to determine the destination of the first title of the Championships.

Cork is guaranteed a third female boxer in Saturday’s finals as Rebelettes Linda Desmond and Leanne Murphy go head-to-head in the light-welter class with the winner advancing to meet either Kaci Rock or Evelyn Igharo.

Desmond and Murphy are team-mates with the Cork Girls Boxing Academy under former Elite champion Seanie Barrett and coaches and the Cork County Boxing Board.

Barrett, who dropped a decision to former Irish head coach and Olympian Billy Walsh in the 1994 final, claimed an Elite belt in 1999.

Matthew Tyndall faces Peter Vrinceanu in an all Dublin affair and told iaba.ie that he’ll be giving it his best shot versus the Crumlin BC stand out on a card stacked with Ireland’s top prospects.

“There are some very good lads in the weight. It would be great to win my 8th Irish title at 16 years old. It’s a big ask, but I’m going to give my best,” he said.

Friday’s weigh-ins at the National Stadium will be held between 8am and 9am and 12pm and 1pm.

The IABA are using the tournament as part of their selection process for the European Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria in September (2/11).
