FOUR IRISH IN ACTION AT TOKYO 2020 QUALIFIERS TODAY

Four Irish boxers are in action at the 43-nation European qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 at the Copperbox Box Arena in London today.

Click here for schedule and here for Day 1 results.

George Bates, Emmett Brennan, and Kiril Afanasev are betwen the ropes.

The Dublin trio meet Leon Domingue of Spain, Bosnia’s Radenko Tomic and Georgia’s Begadaze Nikoloz for places in the last 16.

Cork southpaw Desmond faces Italy’s No. 3 seed Angela Carina two wins away from booking a welterweight ticket at the 32nd Olympiad.

The Desmond versus Carina three-rounder was scheduled for Tuesday but has been brought forward.

The qualifiers got underway yesterday but no Irish were involved.

Saturday’s program produced the biggest shock of the day after Belgian lightweight Delfine Persoon lost.

The Flanders police officer, the former WBC World pro champion who dropped a majority decision to Katie Taylor in a WBC/WBO/IBF/WBA unifier at Madison Square Garden last summer, was on the wrong end of a split decision to unheralded Greek lightweight Nikoleta Pita.

Persoon had won 44 of her 46 pro fights before Saturday’s exit. Click here for IABA report.

Meanwhile, Kellie Harrington is in against Poland’s Aneta Rygielska on St Patrick’s Day for a place in the last eight. Rygielska decisioned Romania’s Paula Cosmo last night.

Boxing begins at 12 noon today. A second session starts at 6pm.

EUROPEAN OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS – DAY 1

No Irish boxers are in action on Day 1 of the European qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 at the Copperbox Arena in London today.

However, Team Ireland will be keeping an eye on the decisions from tonight’s Germany versus Belarus feather clash and the lightweight encounter between Poland and Romania as No. 2 seeds Kurt Walker and Kellie Harrington meet the winners in the last 16.

Belgium’s Delfine Persoon is in action this afternoon at lightweight. The former WBC World champion, who has regraded to the amateur codes, takes on Greece’s  Pita Nikoleta.

Persoon dropped a majority decision to London 2012 champion, Katie Taylor, in an IBF/WBO/WBA/WBC unifier at Madison Square Garden last June.

George Bates, Emmett Brennan and Kiril Afanasev get the show on the road for Ireland tomorrow.

The Dublin trio are between the ropes in the last 32.

Cork southpaw Christina Desmond is also in action on Sunday. The Fr Horgan’s BC/Garda BC lefty was scheduled to meet Italy’s No. 3 seed Angela Carina on St Patrick’s Day, according to the draw, but the bout has been brought forward to March 15.

Over forty nations are battling it out at the qualifiers for 77 Olympic places.

Boxing begins at noon today. Click here for details.

TOP IRISH R&J AT ASIA/OCEANIA QUALIFIERS

Irish boxing had a man between the ropes at the Asia/Oceania qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 which concluded in Amman, Jordan recently

Top international Referee and Judge (R&J) Dermot McDermott was the third person in the ring for the tournament which yielded 63 places for the 32nd Olympiad.

The Curragh BC, formerly Ryston BC, man refereed a number of bouts, the super heavy final, a box-off for a Tokyo 2020 place and judged several three-rounders in the Levant.

A vastly experienced AIBA 3-star R&J, McDermott is regularly involved in Irish and international competition.

The Kildare man has officiated in the World Series of Boxing and the All African Championships and in top AIBA tournaments.

The Asia/Oceania event was the second of four Continental qualifiers for Tokyo 2020.
