SCHOOLBOY TRAINING NOTICE

 

There will be no schoolboys squad training this Sunday due to the finals of the Third-level Boxing Championships (IATBA) taking place in the gym.

With Provincial and National championships taking place over the next few weeks, training will not resume until after those events. Please see www.iaba.ie

ASIA/OCEANIA TOKYO 2020 QUALIFIERS UNDERWAY IN JORDAN

 

 

 

The Asia/Oceania qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 are approaching the business end of the tournament in Jordan.

63 Tokyo 2020 places are up for grabs with the preliminary rounds of the competition now completed in Amman.

The action continues throughout the weekend.

Elsewhere, 33 boxers booked tickets for the 32nd Olympiad at the African qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal last weekend.

The European qualifiers begin in London on March 13. Seventy-seven places – 50 for men and 27 for women – will be on the line.

Team Ireland’s 13-strong squad leave for London on March 11.

The Americas qualifiers begin in Buenos Aires at the end of the month.

The final World event in Paris in May completes the qualification process for Tokyo 2020.

286 boxers – 186 men and 100 women- will battle it out in Tokyo, over half a century after Immaculata BC legend Jim McCourt won Ireland’s only medal (bronze) in any sport at Tokyo 1964.

Six Tokyo 2020 host places go to Japan and eight invitation places will be distributed through the Tripartite Commission.

The remaining 272 berths are earned the hard way – in the ring.

EUROPEAN YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE

 

The 2020 European Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships begin in Budva, Montenegro on Friday, April 24.

Over 300 athletes are expected to between the ropes on the Adriatic coast.

The IABA used January’s National U/18 Championships as part of their selection process for the tournament.

The 2020 European Youth semi-finals and finals will be decided on May 1 and 2nd.

33 TOKYO 2020 PLACES CLAIMED IN AFRICA

The first 33 Tokyo 2020 berths were claimed at the African qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal over the weekend.

North Africa secured the lion’s share of the places with Algeria topping the table after qualifying seven athletes and Morocco booking six tickets.

Cameroon and Zambia earned three places each.

The Asia/Oceania qualifiers begin in Amman tomorrow.

London’s calling for the clash of Europe’s finest – including Ireland’s 13-strong squad – on March 13 before the Americas go head-to-head in Buenos Aires at the end of the month.

The final world qualifier begins in Paris on May 13.

Box-offs will be used the determine the final placings in some weights.
