LIFFEY CRANE HIRE ELITE CHAMPIONSHIP WEIGH-INS

All boxers weighed-in this morning and early afternoon ahead of the opening bell for the Liffey Crane National Elite Championships at the National Stadium tonight.

15 bouts will be decided on Day 1 of the flagship competition of Irish boxing.

Irish boxing is proudly sponsored by Liffey Crane Hire

The Crumlin BC is facing a hectic start to the tournament.

Eight boxers from the Dublin club are between the ropes in the first two days of competition.

Two-time Irish Olympian Phil Sutcliffe, the head coach at the Crumlin unit, reckons they’ll be flat out as they have three back-to-back quarter-finals this evening alone.

“Anyone could win with a bit of luck. I’m hoping to get three or four wins but I never count my chickens, anything could happen, he said.

Sutcliffe also likes the format of the Championships which will run this Friday, Saturday, Monday, and next Wednesday. The finals will be decided on this day week.

“When the lads are ready, it’s better like this. In the old days, you’d weigh in and have to wait around,” he added.

Christain Cekiso and Colm Murphy get proceedings underway in the feather class this evening.

Antrim welter Aidan Walsh, who asked plenty of questions of England’s current European Elite champion Pat McCormack at the World Elites this year – the Sunderland fighter edged a split decision –  meets Terry McEntee.

The winner advances to face Galway’s defending 69kg champion Kieran Molloy on Saturday.

Boxing begins at 7pm tonight.

The IABA is running the Elites twice this year in the lead up to the European qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 at the Copperbox Arena in London next March.

LIFFEY CRANE HIRE NATIONAL ELITE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019

Elite Cups

Two precedents exist for running the Liffey Crane National Elites for the second time in the same year and a select group of boxers have the distinction of doing the double.

Irish boxing is proudly sponsored by Liffey Crane Hire.

The 2nd edition of the 2019 National Elites begins at the National Stadium tomorrow night in the countdown to the European qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 at the Copperbox Arena in London next March and the final world qualifier in Paris next May.

Likewise with the 2003 and 2015 Elites ahead of the qualifiers for Athens 2004 and Rio 2016.

Paul Hyland, Andrew Murray, Paul McCloskey, Ken Egan, Andy Lee and Alan Reynolds claimed belts in February 2003 and retained their titles in December of the same year.

Over a decade later, Brendan Irvine, Kurt Walker, Dean Walsh, Lauren Hogan, Kellie Harrington, Michaela Walsh, Clare Grace, Diana Campbell, Adam Nolan, Dervla Duffy, Michael O’Reilly, Darren O’Neill and Dean Gardiner secured 13 of the gold medals on offer in January 2015.
and had their hands raised in victory for a second time in November/December 2015.

O’Keeffe &  Taylor,2015 final

Olympic champion Katie Taylor didn’t enter the flagship tournament of Irish boxing in January 2015 because of injury, but she met and beat Tipperary’s Shauna O’Keeffe (Clonmel BC) in November of that year in a cracking lightweight final.

The meeting with O’Keeffe marked the first and only time the current two-weight pro titlist – she received walkovers up to that point – boxed for an Irish title at the Stadium.

Meanwhile, current European Elite and European U/22 champions Aoife O’Rourke and Amy Broadhurst won Elite belts in February this year and will secure their second titles of 2019 on walkovers.

TEN OF THE BEST – JIM O’SULLIVAN

The late Jimmy ‘The Memory Man’ Magee with boxers who between them hold 40 national boxing titles, from left to right, boxer Darren O’Neill, 5, Mick Dowling, 8, Jim O’Sullivan,10, Kenny Egan, 10, and Billy Walsh, 7

The 2019 Liffey Crane Hire National Elites begin at the National Stadium tomorrow night.

When Jim O’Sullivan won his first Irish Elite title in 1980, the average wage was €104 a week in today’s currency. By the time he finished collecting Elite belts in 1990, the average weekly wage had risen to €283 a week.

Roman heavyweight Julius Caesar, according to English southpaw Willie Shakespeare, ignored the advice of a fortune teller to beware of the Ides of March back in the day and ended up KO’d, permanently, in the middle of the month!

But O’Sullivan, boxing out of the St Patrick’s BC in Enniscorthy, didn’t have any issues with the Ides of the third month of the year as all his ten National Elite titles were claimed in March – except 1983 when he was injured – in three different weights between 1980 and 1990.

In 2011, as part of the Centenary celebrations of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA), the ten boxers with the most Irish titles were honoured in Dublin.

O’Sullivan (10), Ken Egan (10),Harry Perry (9), Mick Dowling (8), Neil Gough (8), Jim McCourt (7), Billy Walsh (7), Alan Reynolds (7), Andrew Reddy (6) and Kieran Joyce (6) were lauded.

London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympians Darren O’Neill and David Oliver Joyce had since improved their haul of Irish Elite belts to six apiece since that commemorative ceremony.

Egan claimed his belts consecutively, while O’Sullivan missed the 1983 Elite Championships because of a hand injury. His modest reaction to having his achievements described as extraordinary was: “I was good at running!”

The ten-time Irish Elite champion revealed that he had made up his mind in advance, win or lose, to hang up his gloves at the 1990 Championships where he beat Lee Mervyn to become the first Irish boxer to hit double figures.

“That was my last fight, but I decided well before that that I was going to retire. I knew that once I won that night I was retiring. I trained very hard from those Championships, said the Wexford southpaw.

“I would be out of bed at three in the morning to do the roadwork. Boxing is very demanding at that level and it can in many ways be quite a selfish sport. I knew going into my last Championships that my conditioning wasn’t going to let me down, that if I was beaten that it would be by someone that was better than me.

“Ger Lawlor, Mick Queally and Brian Byrne were excellent boxers, very tough. Lee Mervyn had knocked out a few opponents on the way to the final and I knew I had to be careful with him. Jim Ingallas was another fine boxer who won the heavyweight title at the Stadium in the early 1980s. He was an American lad working in Shannon Airport and boxing out of Limerick.”

gloves

O’Sullivan’s advice to younger boxers is to listen to your seconds.

“I had Bernard Dunne (from Enniscorthy) as my coach and he taught me everything. He calls himself the “real Bernard Dunne,” he joked.

“Young boxers should learn the art of self-defence. Boxing is a sport where you hit and try to not get hit. Listen to you coaches, train hard and don’t do silly things.”

O’Sullivan, who beat Joe Egan, Mike Tyron’s sparring partner, in the 1985 final at the Stadium, represented his country 52 times.44 of those caps were at Elite level and 8 in U/19 internationals. He revealed that his wrist was broken for most of his title wins.

“I cracked a bone in my left wrist before the Europeans in 1981. I had it looked at by a doctor, but they couldn’t find anything. But every time I punched I could feel excruciating pain.I had it looked at again a few years later and my wrist had been actually broken for most of the ten titles.

“I’ll be at the Championships this year. I’m looking forward to seeing the young talent coming through the ranks, and, as usual, I expect there will be a few surprises at the National Stadium this year. There always is,” added the man who was never beaten at an Irish Elite Championships.

The 2020 National Elites begin at the National Stadium on Friday.
