WORLD ELITE CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE

No Irish boxers are in action on Day 3 of the World Elites Championships in Ekaterinburg, Russia tomorrow.

However, Ireland’s No. 6 seed Kurt Walker will be keeping an eye on the result of the Samuel Kistohurry (France) versus David Avila (Columbia) bout as he’ll meet the winner in the last 32 on Sunday.

So far, Ireland has won two out of three bouts with Laois middle Michael Nevin and Dublin heavy Kiril Afanasev having their hands raised in victory on Monday and today.

Antrim light heavy Kane Tucker bowed out to Kyrgyzstan’s Rio 2016 Olympian and Asian Games’ bronze medallist Erkin Adylbek this afternoon, while Regan Buckley and Wayne Kelly are between the ropes on Thursday.

Meantime, as per AIBA rule change earlier this year, boxers can now wear their national colours in the ring.

The last time boxers wore national colours in competition was at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

The scoring system was changed after those Games because of issues, to put it diplomatically, with decisions and boxers wore red and blue uniforms for the first time at a major tournament at the 1989 World Men’s Elites in Moscow where Barcelona 1992 Olympic champion Michael Carruth claimed bronze.

AFANASEV ADVANCES AT WORLD ELITES BUT TUCKER BOWS OUT

Irish heavyweight Kiril Afanasev advanced to the last 32 of the World Men’s Elites on a unanimous decision over Austin Aokuso in Russia today.

The Dubliner earned a 30-27,30-27,29-28,29-28,29-28 verdict after a hard-punching and tactical three-rounder against the Australian in Ekaterinburg.

Afansev will now meet Bulgaria’s Radolsav Pantaleev in the last 32 on Sunday.

Earlier today, Antrim’s Kane Tucker was beaten on a unanimous decision by Erkin Adylbek of Kyrgyzstan in the light-heavy class.

Final scores: 30-27,30-27,30-7,29-28,29-27 to Adylbek who advances to the last 32.

Tucker countered well – two big rights in rounds two and three were the pick of his shots – but the pressure tactics and longer reach of the Rio 2016 Olympian and Asian Games bronze medallist proved to be the deciding factors in an up-tempo and open 81kg clash.

Meanwhile, Regan Buckley and Wayne Kelly are the next Irish boxers in action on Thursday versus Indonesia’s Aldoms Suquor and Matthew Alexander of Trinidad & Tobago.

Current European and EU champion Kurt Walker awaits the winner of Wednesday’s bout between France’s Samuel Kistohurry and Columbia’s David Avila in the featherweight class in the last 32 on Sunday.

FAY CROWNED EUROPEAN CHAMPION IN SOFIA

Niamh Fay is the new European Youth champion after another high-octane, high-punching performance in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The Swords BC bantam beat Croatia’s Nikolina Cacic on a 4-1 split decision – 30-27,29-28,29-28,29-28, 28-29 – to take the 54kg title.

Fay dominated the first two rounds and rocked her opponent with big hooks off both hands en route to victory.

Cacic, to her credit, stood up to Fay’s relentless aggression and won the last frame 4-1, but the Dubliner had more than enough in the bank to take the gold medal after winning the first and seconds rounds 4-1 and 5-0.

Fay won four fights en route to gold in Bulgaria.

Dom O’Rourke, President of the IABA and Irish team managers Anna Moore and Paddy Osbourne hailed her performance this afternoon.

Ireland will be taking home gold and three bronze medals from Sofia, courtesy of Fay, Daina Moorehouse, Leah Gallen and Lisa O’Rourke

(Ireland are due to arrive home from Sofia via Dublin Airport tomorrow, Wednesday, September 11, at 5.20pm, Terminal 1)
