MEDALS & RANKINGS TABLES AT EURO YOUTHS

Ireland finished in 8th spot in the medals table and 8th in the rankings table at the 37-nation European Youths in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The squad arrived home last night.

Niamh Fay (gold), Leah Gallen (bronze), Lisa O’Rourke (bronze) and Daina Moorehouse (bronze), pictured above, finished in podium positions in Sofia.

Irish boxing has now won 40 medals at all levels – Elite, Youth, Junior and Schoolboy/girl – medals – of European competition this year.

TEAM IRELAND ARRIVE HOME FROM SOFIA

 

Team Ireland arrived home from the European Youths in Sofia, Bulgaria via Dublin airport this afternoon.

Family, friends, clubs, club coaches and fans were in situ to welcome the squad.

European champion Niamh Fay and proud parents

Niamh Fay (gold), Daina Moorehouse (bronze), Leah Gallen (bronze) and Lisa O’Rourke (bronze) finished in podium positions in Sofia.

Fay, who boxes out of the Swords BC in Dublin, said she was thrilled to claim gold in the bantamweight class after winning four bouts on the bounce in the Bulgarian capital.

Lisa O’Rourke’s elder sister, Aoife, who claimed gold at the European Elites in Madrid recently, was also at the airport today to welcome Team Ireland home.

WALKER TO MEET DAVID AVILA AT WORLD ELITES

Kurt Walker will meet Columbian southpaw David Avila in the last 32 of the World Elites in Ekaterinburg, Russia on Sunday.

Avila shaded France’s Samuel Kistohurry, who Walker has beaten three times since 2012, on a 3-2 split decision today to set up the last 32 showdown with Antrim’s European champion.

Walker, the No. 6 seed at the 77-nation tournament, received a bye into the last 32.

No Irish boxers are in action today.

Regan Buckley and Wayne Kelly are between the ropes tomorrow versus Indonisia and Trinidad and Tobago.

Boxing begins at 11am (Irish time) each morning.

HOMECOMING DETAILS – EUROPEAN YOUTHS

 

Team Ireland are due home from the European Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria via Dublin Airport this afternoon.

Niamh Fay claimed gold at the tournament and Daina Moorehouse, the 2018 European Youth champion, Leah Gallen and Lisa O’Rourke won treble bronze.

The Irish team are scheduled to arrive at 5.10pm this afternoon via Dublin Airport from Frankfurt.

Flight details: September 11, Lufthansa LH 980 via Frankfurt to Dublin (17:10)

NATIONAL NOVICE CHAMPIONSHIPS DRAW (REVISED)

 

Please note that the draw for the 2019 National Novice Championships has been revised (as of this morning, September 11) since last post.

Boxing begins at 7pm this Friday evening and a second session will be decided on Saturday afternoon.

The IABA wishes all boxers the very best of luck at the National Stadium.
