IRELAND BEAT ITALY 6-3 IN 2ND LEG

Ireland beat a talented Italy side in another top class schoolgirl international at the St Brigid’s BC in Edenderry tonight.

What a night of boxing with Ireland getting off to a flying start with wins for Kinsella and Flood.

Irish captain on the night Esther Lambe stepped up a weight but lost on a tight split decision.

Esther looks ready for the Europeans and will be a big hope to medal in Georgia next month.

Ireland, who held a one bout advantage from last night’s 1st leg at the same venue, got back to winning ways with Angelina Duffy, while Italy won the next two.

But Ireland took over after the break with victories for Keogh, Joyce and Gallagher who was outstanding versus Marra Valentina.

This fight had everything. The crowd got behind Gallagher who literally got up off the floor to claim a famous 3-0 win over the very tough Valentina and help Ireland to a 6-3 win on the night.

ODESSA HAT TRICK FOR TEAM IRELAND

Wayne Kelly, Emmet Brennan and Kenny Okungboa progress in Ukraine.

Please see below attachment for Thursday’s quarter-final program.

Boxing2019 – Semen Trestin Memorial Tournament Day3 Schedule

Wayne Kelly advanced to the last eight of the Trestin Memorial in Odessa today.

The Westmeath light-welter beat Ukraine’s Zoravov Petrosayan in a tight three rounder to record his second win in 24 hours and join Tommy Hyde in the quarter-finals.

“No rest days out here,” said the Portlaoise BC southpaw after his victory. “Back again tomorrow. Every day I’m looking to just keep improving, fight by fight.”

Meanwhile, Emmet Brennan, who also won yesterday, advanced from a toe-to-toe battle with Nikita Yakimchyk of Ukraine.

The Dublin middleweight had to go down into the trenches with his fiery opponent with both men delivering and soaking up plenty of leather in a hard-punching 75kg clash.

It was Brennan, however, that will have the opportunity to trade more leather tomorrow after getting the nod, with three judges giving him all three rounds and the other to marking it two rounds apiece for the Irishman.

“Brilliant performance from Emmet. Fantastic fight, not stop action,” said Jimmy Halpin who is working Ireland’s corner with Eoin Pluck.

Halpin is also Brennan’s club coach at the Glasvenin BC.

Athlone BC heavyweight Kenny Okungboa completed the hat-trick with an inside the distance win over Kazakstan’s Shangarbek Batynula.

The Athlone BC heavyweight kept his jab pumping and his hooks flying and went about his business with accuracy and patience to dominate the first round and the man from Central Asia didn’t come out for the start of the second frame after he was retired on his stool.

Kelly, Brennan, Okungboa and Tommy Hyde will box for at least bronze tomorrow.

GIRLS IN GREEN EDGE ITALY IN THRILLER

Ireland came out 5-4 winners over Italy after a night of top class boxing at the St Brigid’s BC in Edenderry,Offaly last night.

Scanned Documents (1)

Italy got off to winning start but Ireland replied three-fold with McCrudden, Lambe and Irvine putting on master classes.

The visitors bounced back with wins for Sannino & Benetazzo to make 3 apiece, with Italy going in front with a 2-1 decision which left the locals a little puzzled after the local girl, Lucy Abbott, was unlucky to be deemed the loser.

But Ireland was quickly level through a big win for Alicia King, so 4-4 it set it up for a thriller and Mongan v Marra did not disappoint. Massive performances from both girls.

And the roars brought the roof down as Mongan’s hand was raised to seal the win for Ireland to leave everyone eager to see the second international this evening.
