KELLY CLAIMS BRONZE IN ODESSA

Wayne Kelly had to settle for bronze versus Yuri Shepelyk of Ukraine at the Trestin Memorial in Ukraine today.

Shepelyk earned a unanimous decision over the Westmeath southpaw in the light-welter class to advance to Saturday’s finals.

Shepelyk earned a 30-37, 30-27, 29-28,29-28,29-28 verdict.

The host nation provided the five judges and the ref for the three rounder.

“Out of my control (the decision) really but happy to get the fights in, every fight and every competition is all preparing me to be the best I can become for the Olympic qualifiers in February,” said Kelly.

“Just happy the way the trip went. I was fortunate to have 4 fights with 3 wins. I’m happy with the coaches help and feedback and looking forward to getting home to recover and regroup, back to the drawing board with my coaches both club and internationally.

The 2018 Irish Elite champion also reckons 2020, the year of the 32nd Olympiad, will be a big year for him.

“I believe I will have a big breakthrough in the next year with big things happening. I’m feeling very positive going forward,” he added.

Irish coaches Eoin Pluck and Jimmy Halpin, speaking after Friday’s semi-final, said they believed that Kelly won rounds two and three. His cleaner shots and footwork also impressed in round one.

The Portlaoise BC man won three bouts en route to the last four. Today’s decision brings Ireland’s competitive interest in the tournament to a close.

Kelly will be presented with his medal tomorrow. Ireland’s five-strong squad won 7 of their 12 contests in Odessa and are due to arrive home at 3.30pm via Dublin Airport on Sunday afternoon.

ONE BRONZE GUARANTEED IN ODESSA

Wayne Kelly guaranteed Ireland at least bronze at the Trestin Memorial Odessa, Ukraine today.

The Portlaoise BC light welter beat Ukraine’s Denys Pesotskyi this afternoon to book a place in Friday’s semi-finals.

Today’s win is Kelly’s third in three days and his second over a Ukrainian opponent as the host nation are doubling, trebling and even quadrupling up in some limits.

The fight was stopped in round 2 with both boxers needing attention from ringside medics for cuts. Kelly, who was cut near his right eye, won on points when it went back to the judges.

The Westmeath southpaw, bearing the scars of previous battles this week, picked off his shots and kept his composure in the face of Denys Pesotskyi’s aggression. The final scores read 20-18 x 3 to Kelly and 20-18 x 2 for his battling opponent.

Nothing is going to keep Kelly out of the ring tomorrow and he’s gunning for his fourth win in four days.

“I’ll keep her lit,” he said.

Earlier today, Dublin’s Emmet Brennan and Cork’s Tommy Hyde lost out in their bids to reach the last eight.

Brennan, despite taking a count late in the third, finished well versus Ivan Papakyn but the Ukraine middle probably won the first two rounds of the 75kg clash.

Hyde also took a harsh standing count in the second, shortly after he received attention to a cut near his left eye following an accidental clash of heads versus Ukrainian light-heavy Dannylo Zhasan.

The Mayfield BC man finished the first round with hooks off both hands and had his opponent on the ropes and was troubling the physically imposing Ukrainian No. 2 with his backhand.

Neither man engaged much in a tactical start to the second with Hyde needing attention to the cut after a skirmish at around 1.20 into the frame. The third was also tight.

Brennan and Hyde impressed winning two fights en route to quarter-finals.

Athlone heavyweight Kenny Ogungboa looked as if he was going to stop Eshish Husain early in the first round but the Jordanian heavyweight, who soaked up a lot of leather inside the opening 20 seconds, weathered the early onslaught and finished out a slugfest on the front foot.

Neither man had to go looking for each other, while Okungbowa’s cause wasn’t helped after he received a public warning for dropping his head in the second round.

Two of the judges scored it a draw and the other three went against Okungboa who won his last 16 fight in Odessa yesterday.

“This game, it’s a roller coaster. You’re up one minute and down the next,” said Irish coach Jimmy Halpin who is working Ireland’s corner with head coach Eoin Pluck.

ERNE BC CONTINUE TO IMPRESS IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

If awards were given out for the IABA’s most travelled boxing club then the unassuming Fermanagh based Erne Boxing Club would be almost certain recipients.

In the 2018/19 season the Erne Boxing Club as competed and won numerous Gold medals at several International Box Cups throughout Europe in addition to scoring good wins on overseas club tournaments. Their 2018/19 campaign and travels has included the following:

October 2019 – HSK Box Cup Denmark, 3 Gold & 1 Silver

November 2018 – King of the Ring Sweden, 2 Gold & Best Youth Boxer Award for Mark Kells

November 2018 – Kopavogs Tournament Iceland, 2 wins out of two

December 2018 – Odivelas Box Cup Portugal, 1 Gold & 1 Silver

January 2019 – Selby Tournament England, won team match 4-3

February 2019 – Golden Girls Sweden, 1 Silver

May 2019 – East Midlands Box Cup England, 3 Gold

May 2019 – Bristol Box Cup England, 1 Gold & 1 Silver

May 2019 – Haringey Box Cup England, 1 Gold

Furthermore, the club hosted two tournament this season featuring teams from Newburgh USA, Kopavogs Iceland and Romford England.

“There is no secret millionaire supporting the club. We travel on a very tight budget but with good advance planning its possible to keep the costs down. For most trips we book months in advance and although there is always a risk or injury/sickness or some other unforeseen circumstances that may prevent a boxer from travelling so far it has worked out well and its rarely been an issue.” advised Sean Crowley – Erne Boxing Club’s Head Coach.

The club advise that 2019/20 season will be as equally busy and that they will kickstart the new campaign with a visit to the inaugural Gloves Up, Guns Down International Box Cup in Newburgh this October; a tournament in which they have had great involvement in getting started.

“This October will be our third visit in as many seasons to Newburgh. We took a team of six in 2017 and then a team of 14 last year with boxers from four clubs. This year there will be 28-35 boxers from Ireland competing over there, Crowley added.

“After our first visit in 2017, I set out a vision with my contact Leonard Lee from the Newburgh Hook Elite Boxing Club to help kickstart some regeneration in the area by introducing a plan for staging an International Box Cup tournament.

“I wrote the proposal and tournament plan on behalf on Newburgh Hook Elite Boxing Club and it has since been accepted by New York Metro Boxing Board and subsequently sanctioned by USA Boxing, and also backed by the Kaplan Foundation who do so much great work with the underprivileged youth of Newburgh.

The intention this year is to have 7-9 teams from across Europe including 4-5 from Ireland, 2 from England, 2-3 from Scandinavia and 1 from Portugal. I have been using my international contacts to promote and support this event.

“The entry is capped at 50 European boxers this year and 300 overall but the plan for the following year is 450-500 entries, once the district has gained the experience and skills to cope greater competitor volumes. Therefore, there will be amble opportunities for Irish clubs to mix with the USA’s finest boxing talent in the near future.

“Also, with budget airline Norwegian Air flying direct from Dublin to Newburgh with low cost flights it’s financially very feasible too.” added Sean Crowley.

“More information about the Gloves Up, Guns Down International Box Cup tournament for 2020 can be obtained by contacting the Erne Boxing Club.”
