Ireland will be back in the hunt for European Elite medals in Spain next month.

Athletes will compete across ten limits – 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg, 81+ kg – including the five Olympic weights of fly (51kg), feather (57kg), light (60kg), welter (69kg) and middle (75kg) for women in the Spanish capital.

IRISH SQUAD DUE HOME FROM UKRAINE TODAY

Westmeath’s Wayne Kelly believes this will be his breakthrough year after claiming bronze at the Elite Trestin Memorial in Odessa, Ukraine.

The Portlaoise BC light-welter was on the wrong end of a decision to Yuri Shepelyk of Ukraine in Friday’s 63kg semi-final but won plenty of plaudits for posting three victories in three days en route to the last four.

Five Ukrainian judges scored the three rounder which could have gone either way.

“Out of my control (the decision) really but happy to get the fights in. Every fight and every competition is all preparing me to be the best I can become for the Olympic qualifiers in February,” said Kelly.

“I was fortunate to have 4 fights with 3 wins. I’m happy with the coaches help and feedback and looking forward to getting home to recover and regroup, back to the drawing board with my coaches both club and internationally.

“I believe I will have a big breakthrough in the next year with big things happening. I’m feeling very positive going forward,” added the 2018 Irish Elite champion.

Kelly, Ken O’Kungbowa, Tommy Hyde, Emmet Brennan and Aidan Walsh represented Ireland in Odessa. Eoin Pluck and Jimmy Halpin worked Ireland’s corner.

“Great experience this week with a class team. On to the next one now,” said Cork light-heavy Hyde who remarked via social media that the Eternal City wasn’t constructed in 24 hours after bowing out to the Ukrainian No. 2 in the last eight.

“Lost to the Ukrainian today in a tough and awkward fight. It’s never nice to lose but I’ll take it on the chin and learn from it, Rome wasn’t built in a day.”

The Irish squad are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport at 3.30pm today.

DAY 2 RESULTS – NATIONAL U/18 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Thirty-four bouts were completed over the last 24 hours at the National U/18 Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium.

Eighteen contests were resolved this morning and afternoon ahead of next Friday’s and Saturday’s semi-finals and finals.

It was a positive day for Cork with all three Rebels – Leanne Murphy, Callum Walsh and Megan Lehane – advancing.

Matthew Tyndall, pictured, and Peter Vrinceanu also had their hands raised in victory to set up an all Dublin 64kg decider next Friday.

Tyndall is aiming for title number eight but reckons there’s a lot of work to do yet.

“I’m happy with my performance today, just focusing on the next one, take one fight at a time. There are some very good lads in the weight. It would be great to win my 8th Irish title at 16 years old. It’s a big ask, but I’m going to give my best,” he said.

Jame McMahon, Ryan Dunne and European finalist Jude Gallagher, who all won last night, also progressed today.

The tournament resumes next Friday evening at the Stadium. One final will be decided, with Cathrine Blaney meeting Lauren Dempsey for the feather title.

Friday’s weigh-ins – 8am to 9am and 12pm to 1pm at the Stadium.
