NATIONAL U/18 CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDES AT STADIUM

The National U/18 Championships concluded at the National Stadium in Dublin this afternoon. Eighteen titles were claimed at the home of Irish boxing.

Leah Gallen and Mary Enright were involved in the tightest bout of the day, with Raphoe BC welter Gallen earning a 3-2 split after three rounds of intense competition.

Ryan Dunne, Nicole Clyde, Jude Gallagher, Niamh Fay, Sinainn Glynn, Evelyn Igharo, William Hayden, Jake Tucker and Jason Myers also had their hands raised in victory.

Dublin’s Jack Marley secured the final belt on offer, circa 24 hours after Lauren Dempsey on the first, versus Edward McDonagh in the super-heavy class early this evening.

Meanwhile, Dean Clancy is eyeing up the medals podium at the European Youths in Sofia in September after claiming Irish title No. 7 this afternoon.

The Sean McDermott BC stand out beat talented Ballyduff BC bantam Barry O’Connor in the 56kg decider on a unanimous decision.

A two-time European medallist and Youth Olympian, Clancy compensated for missing training because of his Leaving Cert by putting in two shifts a day with his father en route to his latest All-Ireland triumph.

“I’m absolutely delighted to get my 7th title, it was a great fight altogether. I felt I dictated the pace and landed the cleaner scoring shots, he said.

“My jab and feints were key in setting up my shots, just over the moon with the result and hopefully I’ll get gold this year at the Euros. Funny enough, I only had a couple of weeks to train hard because of my Leaving Cert, but I made up for the loss sessions by training twice a day with my dad.”

Dublin light-welter Matthew Tyndall beat Cork’s Callum Walsh, who claimed gold on the same day that Clancy won silver at the 2017 European Juniors, on a 4-1 split decision.

The 16-year-old Docklands BC ace hailed the contribution of his coaches and team after notching Irish title No. 8.

“It feels great and I am delighted. I didn’t want to sound over confident but I always believed in myself that I could win it,” he said. “I must be one of the youngest to win the U/18s (he is). I wouldn’t have done it without my coaches and team.”

Meantime, who said 13 was unlucky!

St Michael’s Athy stylist Brandon McCarthy secured his 13th national belt on a unanimous decision over Portlaoise BC prospect Cian Reddy.

“Good tough win against a great lad, so I’m excited now to head to my 6th European Championships in September and pick up a 13th All Ireland, he said.

“A big thanks to my coaches Dominic O’Rourke and my father Mick McCarthy and all my family,“ added the 2015 European Schoolboy finalist.

The IABA is using the National U/18 Championships as part of their selection process for the European Men’s and Women’s Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria in September.

The 2019 National U/18 Championships were completed over 70 bouts over the last two weekends.

NATIONAL U/18 CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 3 RESULTS

Lauren Dempsey shaded Catherine Blaney in a cracking U/18 final at the National Stadium tonight.

The featherweights – both European medallists – went all the way down to the final bell before Dempsey’s hand was raised on a 3-2 split to take the first gold of the tournament.

The remaining semi-finals were also decided tonight, with Brandon McCarthy, pictured below, and Cian Reddy setting up Saturday’s 60kg showdown.

In the women’s lightweight class, Leanne Murpny, pictured above, earned a 4-1 split decision in her Rebel County derby with Linda Desmond and Evelynn Igharo also won.

The men’s 64kg gold is down to the last lap, with 2017 European Junior champion Callum Walsh and Matthew Tyndall, who is targeting an eight Irish belt, meeting for the light-welter title in a Cork versus Dublin All-Ireland.

Jack Marley, Barry O’Connor, Eimear McKee, Sinainn Glynn, William Hayden, Rokas Baltrukonis, Jake Tucker, Jack Kelly, Jason Myers, Edward McDonagh and Christian Owney McDonagh also had their hands raised in victory tonight.

The IABA is using the tournament as part of their selection process for the European Youths in Sofia, Bulgaria in September.

Saturday’s finals begin at 4pm. The weigh-ins will be held between 8am and 9am tomorrow morning at the National Stadium.

NATIONAL U/18 C’SHIPS RESUME TONIGHT

The National U/18 Championships will be decided over 37 semi-finals and finals at Dublin’s National Stadium this Friday and Saturday.

The tournament resumes Friday at the home of Olympic, World and European medallists. Seventeen last-four bouts are down for decision.

Catherine Blaney and Lauren Dempsey meet in the 57kg decider in the third bout on the program to determine the destination of the first title of the Championships.

Cork is guaranteed a third female boxer in Saturday’s finals as Rebelettes Linda Desmond and Leanne Murphy go head-to-head in the light-welter class with the winner advancing to meet either Kaci Rock or Evelyn Igharo.

Desmond and Murphy are team-mates with the Cork Girls Boxing Academy under former Elite champion Seanie Barrett and coaches and the Cork County Boxing Board.

Barrett, who dropped a decision to former Irish head coach and Olympian Billy Walsh in the 1994 final, claimed an Elite belt in 1999.

Matthew Tyndall faces Peter Vrinceanu in an all Dublin affair and told iaba.ie that he’ll be giving it his best shot versus the Crumlin BC stand out on a card stacked with Ireland’s top prospects.

“There are some very good lads in the weight. It would be great to win my 8th Irish title at 16 years old. It’s a big ask, but I’m going to give my best,” he said.

Friday’s weigh-ins at the National Stadium will be held between 8am and 9am and 12pm and 1pm.

The IABA are using the tournament as part of their selection process for the European Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria in September (2/11).
