Cork’s Oliver McCarthy, Limerick’s Jason Harty and Clare’s Martin John Mongan recorded a Munster hat-trick at the European Youth Championships in Anapa, Russia today.

But Waterford’s Reece Moran was edged out following a close encounter with Georgia’s Stepane Mkhitarian in the middleweight class.

McCarthy, who claimed a European Schoolboy gold medal in Anapa in 2012, posted a unanimous decision (30-27,30-27,29-28) over Armenia’s Narek Ogannesyan in a fiery 60kg clash to chalk up his second win in 24 hours at the Black Sea Port.

Harty will be back in action tomorrow after recording a solid win (30-27,30-27.29-28) over Patryk Urbanski of Poland and Mongan was in total control in a 30-24,30-25,30-26 landslide over Moldova’s Alexandr Borison.

McCarthy and Mongan join Terry McEntee in Friday’s quarter-finals. The trio are one win each away from at least bronze.

McEntee impressively got his country off to a flying start against Mykola Lytvyschenko of the Ukraine yesterday, but James McGivern was adjudged to have “lost” to Russia’s Vladimir Strygin on a split decision.

McGivern dominated all three rounds in terms of shot selection, punch volume, footwork, tactics, ring craft, style and work rate.

www.iaba.ie scored it 30-26 across the board to the Irish champion, but two of the judges opted for the home athlete.

Harty, Brett McGinty, Brian Kennedy and Martin Jim Mongan will be between the ropes tomorrow in Anapa.
