Two Ireland boxers win through to European Junior Championship finals.

Ireland will return home from the European Junior Championships with 7 medals – five bronze, and two which could be up-graded from silver to gold on Sunday.

66kg John Donoghue, of Olympic BC, Mullingar, will be adding to his career medal tally, which already includes a World Junior gold. He was dominate throughout his semi final against Vasilije Djurdjevic, and forced an RSC2.

63kg Edward Harty, of Portlaoise BC battled to a split decision semi final win over Romania’s Darius Sorin Stegari.

50kg Kalib Walsh, of Wexford BC, comes home with bronze, after the decision in his bout went to opponent, Russia’s Islam Magomedov. Also coming home with bronze medals are 66kg Cassie Henderson, 52kg Eddie Corcoran, Olympic BC, Mullingar; 57kg Kayleigh Byrne of Gorey BC and 63kg Kaysie Joyce of Clonmel BC.

370 boxers are contesting the championships. 28 federations, in all, are competing at the tournament: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, England, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey.

IABA last contested this tournament in 2022 and returned with a massive haul of ten medals: 2 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze. Ava Henry (Docklands) and Tadhg O’Donnell (Four Kings) claimed gold; silvers were won by Grace Conway Dowling (Tredagh), Niamh Keogh (Olympic L), Mary McDonagh (Sliabh Luachra) and Jamie Collins (Drimnagh). Bronze medalists were Alfie Jordan (Olympic L), John Harty (Portlaoise), Cillian Reilly Lennon (Jobstown) and Sophie Curley Gray (Dealgan).

Finals

63kg Edward Harty will box for gold against Aremenia’s Aleks Petrosayan in Bout 11 of the Afternoon Session. That session begins at 12pm, Irish time.

66kg John Donoghue will also face Armenian opposition, in Artyo Stepanyan. They’ll meet in bout 11 of the Evening Session, which begins at 4.30pm, Irish time.

Medal medal ceremonies will take place after bout 7 in both sessions, , and at the conclusion of the session. 66kg Cassie Henderson of Phoenix will receive her medal in the mid-point ceremony in the Afternoon session. 52kg Eddie Corcoran, Olympic BC, Mullingar will be bestowed with his medal in the post session ceremony.

57kg Kayleigh Byrne of Gorey BC and 63kg Kaysie Joyce of Clonmel BC will be awarded with their medals at the mid-point ceremony in the Evening Session, and 50kg Kalib Walsh, of Wexford BC, will receive his medal at the end of the Evening Session.
