Team Ireland Women Finish Joint Second In European U22 Championship Medals Tables.

Team Ireland women have finished joint second in the European U22 Women’s Championship medals table.

Ireland holds that honour alongside Poland and Turkey; Italy top the table.

Team Ireland’s 9 women boxers are coming home from Croatia with four medals.

Two golds were clinched in yesterday’s finals by Team Co-Captain, 70kg Lisa O’Rourke, following a 4-1 split decision win over Daria Parada of Poland.

Ireland’s second gold came courtesy of 54kg Niamh Fay,  a former European Youth champ, who won a unanimous decision victory over Sharon Prisco of Italy.

The Mayo boxer, former European Youth gold medallist, contested her final against Ukrainian Karolina Makhno.

She put in a valiant performance, and won silver by virtue of a 5-0 decision in favour of her opponent.

Team Ireland’s 4th women’s medal is the bronze awarded to Wicklow boxer, Kaci Rock.

Kaci contested, and lost, her semi-final against German Stefanie Von Berge, who went on to claim gold in the weight.

Team Ireland women have finished 3rd in the over-all team rankings at the Europeans.

With four medals, and 9 boxers, the team claimed that place out of 24 participating nations having won 18 bouts, in all.

Turkey finished in first place, and Italy in second.

Team Ireland heavyweight, Jack Marley, is the last Irish boxer between the ropes at the tournament.

He contests his final, the last bout of the championships, against Roberto Lizzi of Italy. His is bout 6 of the evening session, at around 6.05pm, Irish time.

Team Ireland also has 2 bronze medals in the Men’s competition – bantamweight, Dylan Eagleson and Lightweight, Paul Loonam.

Their medals will be bestowed upon them this afternoon.

2 Golds & 1 Silver For Team Ireland At European U22 Championships.

Team Ireland has claimed 2 gold medals and a silver medal at the Women’s European U22 Championship Finals.

Co-Captain, light middleweight Lisa O’Rourke, was the first of Ireland’s boxers between the ropes.

She competed against Daria Parada of Poland in a strongly contested bout – the sister of Olympian and Strandja champion, Aoife, won by a 4-1 split decision.

54kg Niamh Fay, a former European Youth champ, met Sharon Prisco of Italy in Bout 2 of the evening session.

She was dominant and assured throughout the bout and won by unanimous decision.

Last of Team Ireland boxer in action was middleweight, Aoibhe Carabine, who boxed Ukrainian Karolina Makhno.

66kg Kaci Rock was awarded her bronze medal, following her semi-final finish.

Heavyweight and now two time European U22 medallist, Jack Marley, contests his final on Wednesday.

He will box Italy’s Roberto Lizzi in the last bout of the tournament, bout 6 in the evening session.

The 2022 Junior 2 National Championships Take Place This Weekend.

The 2022 Junior 2 National Championships will be boxed at the National Stadium, Dublin, across three days beginning on Friday.

Schedule of boxing:

Quarter Finals: Friday, March 25th from 6pm

Semi Finals: Saturday, March 26th from 11am

Finals: Sunday, March 27th from 2.30pm.

Weigh-ins: Daily, on the day of boxing, between 8am and 9am and 12pm and 1pm. Please note that boxers with walkovers in the finals must weigh in on the day of the final.

Rounds:  Boxing will be 3 x 2-minute rounds for Junior 1 and Junior 2

Entries: Only those sent by the Secretaries of the Provincial Councils and of the Antrim and Dublin County Boards shall be accepted. Entries must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 4th March.

At the conclusion of the Unit Championships, details of names, club, age (B4/G4/J1/J2) and weights for the Irish Championships must be sent by email to sally@iaba.ie and to Stephen Connolly at s.connolly1961@yahoo.com If any boxer is moving up in weight from the Unit Championships, the boxers club must notify the Unit Secretary of same before entries are sent. As there was no Championship in 2021, there will be no current champions entering.

Entry Fee: A €10 entry fee applies. This fee will be collected from all boxers at the weigh-in on their first day of boxing. Boxers must also give their Boxing Record Book to National Registrar and Chief Official Stephen Connolly at their initial weigh-in.

Anti-Doping: Boxers must provide details of any medication they are taking or have taken in the preceding 4 weeks. Anti-Doping may be carried out at any stage of the competition.

Attention is called to the stipulation in the IABA Rule book that each boxer presented by his/her club shall be fit to box. This is the responsibility of the club.

Attire: Coaches must wear tracksuits and runners in their corners at all sessions and endeavour to set a high standard of hygiene. Only qualified coaches are permitted in corners.

N.B. It is a condition of entry that all boxers and their clubs have signed and submitted the Members Acknowledgement Form and it is the responsibility of the entering unit that this stipulation is complied with. 

Gumshields: Red/Orange/Pink or variations of these colours are not allowed.

Any boxer who is participating in other contact sports (see www.iba.sport) shall be removed from these Championships.

Ulster IABA Join In Active Living Strategy Launch.

Ulster IABA were key participants in a Celebration of Sport at Stormont Pavilion, Belfast, at which a 10 year Active Living strategy for children was launched.

The strategy launch was hosted by the Minister for Communities, Deirdre Hargey,  and is aimed at promoting greater activity by young people, through sport.

IABA Belfast Community Coaches Patrick Gallagher & Brendan Irvine provided some fundamental coaching to 10 local schools during sports taster sessions aligned with the Active Living strategy launch.

In all, 240 children took part in sporting taster sessions at today’s events.

IABA Development Officers Paddy Barnes and Liam Corr attended the AL launch, and Paddy participated in panel discussions on sport, young people, and activity as part of the Athletes Panel.

3 Team Ireland Boxers Vie For European U22 Gold.

Three Team Ireland boxers contest the finals of the European U22 Championship in Porec, Croatia today.

Team Co-Captain, light middleweight Lisa O’Rourke, is the first Irish boxer between the ropes. She takes on Daria Parada of Poland in Bout 5 of the Afternoon Session, which begins at 1pm, Irish time.

54kg Niamh Fay, a former European Youth champ, meets Sharon Prisco of Italy in Bout 2 of the Evening Session and former European Youth gold medalist, middleweight Aoibhe Carabine takes on Ukrainian Karolina Makhno in But 5 of the same session, which begins at 5pm, Irish time.
