The Cavan BC flyweight meets Hungary’s Krisztina Beri for a place in the last 16.

No Irish boxers are in action on the opening day of the Championships tomorrow.

Roscommon middle Aoife O’Rourke, the No. 3 seed in Madrid, and Dundalk light Amy Broadhurst are between the ropes on Monday versus the Ukraine and Czech Republic.

O’Rourke meets Tetiana Petrovich in the last eight with at least bronze up for grabs and Broadhurst is in against Dominika Ciklova in the last 16.

Cork’s Christina Desmond faces Dutch welter Anna Van Leeuwen for a place in the last eight on Tuesday.

Irish team manager JP Kinsella remarked that it was a competitive draw for Ireland’s four-strong squad but that the team had an excellent training camp under their belts and will be well up for the challenges ahead.

Broadhurst and O’Rourke will take part in Saturday’s opening ceremony at 4pm (Irish time).

The tournament rest day is on August 29.

136 boxers are representing 31 nations in Madrid.
