4 medals secured, 4 more QFs to box: Team Ireland at the Women’s European Championships.

An historic day for Team Ireland at the Women’s European Championship in Budva, Montenegro.

48kg Shannon Sweeney was the first Irish boxers in action on the first day of Quarter Finals – taking on Slovakia’s Nicole Durikova. Shannon made short work of the bout, secured at least a bronze medal and a semi-final berth following an RSC R2.

Next up was 52kg Carly McNaul, who contested against Italy’s Olena Savchuk in her QF in bout 8 of the same session. Carly boxed valiantly and left it all in the ring but it wasn’t to be – the 3-2 decision went to her opponent: 28:29, 29:28, 27:30, 27:30, 29:28. 57kg Micheala Walsh met Romania’s Claudia Nechita in bout 10 and claimed a 4-1 and bronze. The judges scored the bout 29:28, 26:30, 27:30, 27:30, 28:29.

In the evening session, 63kg World Champion Amy Broadhurst made it two RSC wins for Team Ireland – this time over Serbia’s Milena Matovic. Echoing Shannon, the bout was stopped in Amy’s favour in the second round.

70kg Tina Desmond now has two European medals under her belt, following a 5-0 win over Sweden’s Hanna Ingrid Malena Hede. The final score: 25:30, 26:30, 26:30, 26:30, 26:30.

50kg Caitlin Fryers is first up – she contests against Bulgaria’s Zlatislava Chukanova in bout 2 of the afternoon session. In bout 12, reigning Olympic lightweight champ, Kellie Harrington, meets England’s Shona Whitwell.

Welterweight, Kaci Rock, opens proceedings in the evening session, against Germany’s Stefanie von Berge. Olympian, 75kg Aoife O’Rourke will meet Turkey’s Busra Isildar in bout 8.
