Team Ireland boxers recorded 6 wins on Day Three of the European Junior Championships.

First between the ropes was Light fly, Jamie Collins, contesting against Moldova’s Ion Peni in bout 3 of Ring A’s afternoon session. Jamie progresses forward following a 4-1 split decision win, 30:24, 29:27, 27:29, 30:26, 30:25. That was followed, in bout 11, by the meeting of featherweight, Callum Carragher and Morina Rexhep (KOS). Callum came away with the UD, on a judges’ scoreline of 30:26, 30:26, 30:26, 29:27
30:26.

In the afternoon session of Ring B, flyweight, Calvin Doyle, contested against Moldova’s Volodymyr Melenchuk in bout 5, and recorded a 5-0 win – 30:27, 29:28, 29:28, 29:28, 30:27. In bout 11, lightweight, Ryan Jenkins met Israel’s Abdallah Rahal and won’t go forward following a 3-2 split decision in favour of his opponent, 29:28, 28:29, 28:29, 29:28, 29:28.

In Ring A’s evening session, light bantam John Harty boxed Moldova’s Nichita Simanschii and claimed a 4-1 win – 27:29, 27:29, 27:29, 27:29, 29:27. Cillian Reilly Lennon was in action against Croatia’s Bernard Grgic in Bout 14, at light welter, and goes forward to the next round following a 3-2 split decision victory. The judges’ scoreline: 29:28, 30:27, 28:29, 29:28, 28:29.

In Ring B’s bout 8, James Kelly met Greece’s Thomas Boditsoploulos. The UD went to the Greek boxer – 29:28, 29:28, 29:28, 30:27, 30:27. Welterweight Tadhg O’Donnell rounded out the day’s action with a 5-0 win over England’s Callum Walsh: 30:27, 30:27, 30:27, 29:28, 30:27.

The tournament, being contested by 353 boxers, is being hosted by the Italian Boxing Federation in Montelsilvano. The competitor nations are: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.

9 Team Ireland boxers contest tomorrow. 50kg Grace Conway Dowling opens Ireland’s account in Bout 3 of Ring A’s afternoon session, against Ukraine’s Daria Makhrova. 54kg Niamh Keogh boxes her first bout of the competition in bout 7, against Lithuania’s Silvija Karavackaite. Team Co-Captain, lighweight Ava Rose Henry meets Turkey’s Sena Zeynep Comart in bout 13.

57kg Siofra Lawless is between the ropes against Viktorie Jilkova of the Czech Republic in bout 12 of Ring B’s afternoon session. 3 bouts later, 80kg Shauna Crehan makes her tournament debut in bout 15 against Poland’s Kornelia Amelia Kostrzewa.

Team Co-Captain, light middle Charlie Valbergs, opens proceedings in Ring A’s evening session against Hungary’s Krisztian Nileborg. 44-46kg Sophie Curley Gray gets her competition underway in bout 4, against Spain’s Claudia Aparici Alcaniz. 66kg Sarah Murphy is also in action in Italy for the first time on Day Four, in bout 8, against home boxer Amina Golinelli. While in bout 9 in Ring B, light middle, Jodie Byrne, meets Turkey’s Gul Yonca Yilmaz.
