Five Wins & Three More Medals for Team Ireland at the European Schools Championship.

Team Ireland boxers claimed five more wins, and two more podium places, at the European Schools Championship in Turkey.

46kg James Michael “Jamsie” Casey progresses forward following his opening bout of the competition, against Romania’s Raul Benea Antonio. The Team Ireland boxer recorded a 5-0 win, scored: 30:26. 30:27, 30:27, 30: 26, 30: 25. Ten bouts later, 50kg Brandon Geoghegan turned in another dominant performance, this time against England’s Paddy McDonagh. He came away with a unanimous decision win: 27:30, 27:30, 27:30, 28:29, 27:30, and at least a bronze medal.

The evening session began with a bang – 63kg Broderick Adbuire, also making his tournament debut, recorded an RSC win over Moldova’s Vladislav Patosca. In bout 8, 70kg John Paul Mongans, contesting against Greece’s Nikolaos Bliatze, lost by the narrowest of margins, a 3-2 split. The judges scored the bout 29:28, 29:29, 28: 29, 28: 29, 28: 29. In Bout 12, 75kg Callum Barrett took on Germany’s Colin Lottner, and leaves the tournament following an RSC in round 3. Three bouts later, Richard Daniel Kiely, contesting at 80kg, boxed Macedonia’s Ilia Hornet, and has won at least a bronze medal. He won forward in the tournament following a 3-2 split win. The judge scored the bout 29:29, 30:27, 28:29, 29:28, 30:27. Bout 20, 90kg Jordie Cooke met Maftei Ianis of Romania. He claimed at least a bronze medal following a RSC in round one.

Team Ireland was already assured of at least two medals before today’s bouts -following victories by 40kg Elma Barry over Ukraine. Elma boxes for a place in the finals in August 18th’s afternoon session. The second guaranteed medal will come home with 42kg Abbey Molloy, who won her place in the semi finals with a win over Turkey.

7 Team Ireland boxers are in action on Day Six, beginning with 42kg Lochlainn Beagan’s meeting with home boxer, Ehmet Akif Ficici in bout 3 of the afternoon session, which begins at 12pm, Irish time. Lochlainn boxes for a semi final place. 44kg Daniel Joyce boxes for a medal against Myroniuk Ivan of Ukraine in bout 7, while in bout 9, 46kg Jamsie Casey boxes Moldova’s Chirll Slepoi, and will bid for a medal, and a place in Thursday’s semi finals. In bout 16, Christian Doyle, contesting at 48kg, meets Ukraine’s Andrushko Nikita, contesting for a medal, and a semi-finals berth.

63kg Broderick Adbuire is in action for the second consecutive day, meets Poland’s Bartosz Kuros. Broderick boxes for a place in the semi finals. Richard Kiely (80kg) and Jordie Cooke (90kg) are also boxing for the second day in a row, having claimed at least bronze on Day Five. Richard meets Ukraine, in Bout 17, while in Bout 20, Jordie boxes Emils Salm. Both Team Ireland boxers are contesting for places in their respective finals.
