7 days left to register: IABA AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the IABA has been scheduled and registration is now open to all clubs which successfully affiliated by November 1st. Registration will close at midday on Thursday, December 1st.

Time: 2.30pm

Date: Sunday, December 4th

Location: The National Stadium, Dublin.

The following two motions will be proposed, considered and voted upon by Members:

Motion 1:

“That the Company Constitution and the Company Rulebook 2019 be amended to reflect the change of name of the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur (otherwise “AIBA”), to the International Boxing Association (otherwise, the “IBA”).”

Motion 1 explained:

On the 22nd November 2007, as part of a programme of reform, the name of the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur was changed to the International Boxing Association, however the abbreviation of the name remained as the AIBA. In December 2021, the acronym “AIBA” was officially changed to the “IBA.” This was done to rebrand the organisation and to distance itself from the prior administration. The motion before Members today is to amend the IABA Constitution and Rulebook to reflect the acronymic changes to the International Boxing Association. The amendments to the IABA Constitution have been highlighted for ease of reference by Members.

Motion 2:

“That Article 80 be amended with the insertion of sub-paragraph (c) which states that:

The Board may resolve to affiliate, or disaffiliate, the Company with some other association, company or other body where it appears to the Board appropriate to do so and the Board may accept affiliations from associations, companies or other bodies who have an interest in, or association with, boxing on terms set by the Board .”

Motion 2 explained:

In accordance with the main objectives of the Company, which are to foster and develop boxing in Ireland, this addition to the Company Constitution will empower the IABA to affiliate, or disaffiliate, to such other organisations and/or associations, which will assist the Board to promote the main objectives of the Company.

NOTE: The above motion entails an amendment to the Rules of the Association and, accordingly, in accordance with Article 17 of the Company Constitution requires a quorum of 60 affiliated Member Clubs present represented in person by their delegates.

Job Description:

Team Ireland claim 5 World Youth Championship bronze medals; D’Arcy to box for gold.

Team Ireland’s Cliona D’Arcy has won through to the heavyweight final of the World Youth Championships in La Nucia, Spain.

The Tobar Pheadair, Galway, boxer renewed rivalry against  Poland’s Weronika Maja Bochen. The two last met at the same stage in the European Youth Championships in Bulgaria in April. D’arcy was the victor then, and history repeated today – the judges scored the 5-0 bout 30:27, 30:26, 30:27, 30:26, 29:28.

There are two days of finals, on Friday and Saturday. Cliona steps between the ropes to box for gold in the second last bout of the tournament – Ring B’s bout 12 on Saturday – an evening session, beginning at 5pm. She’ll box out of the red corner when she contests against India’s Kirti Kirti.

5 Team Ireland boxers come home with bronze, and invaluable international experience. In Ring A’s afternoon session, light heavy, Team Co-Captain Dearbhla Tinnelly boxed England’s Amber Birch. Judges awarded the 5-0 win to the English boxer: 30:26, 30:25, 30:27, 30:27, 29:28. Dearbhla ends an incredible year as a 2022 World and European medalist.

Lightweight Lee McEvoy boxed against Georgia’s Gocha Gordulava in the same ring and session, and returns to his club, Avona, with bronze hardware. The 5-0 decision went to the Georgian – 27:30
26:30, 26:30, 27:30, 26:30

In Ring B’s afternoon session, light middle Laura Moran took on Uzbekistan’s Aziza Zokirova; the UD went to the Uzbek boxer – 27:30, 27:30, 28:29, 27:30, 28:29. Laura joins Cliona and Dearbhla in being a 2022 World and Youth medalist.

Team Co-Captain, welter Jim Donovan, met Kazakhstan’s Nurkeb Mursal. He lost out on the narrowest of margins – a 3-2 split: 29:28, 28:29, 28:29, 29:28, 28:28. Two bouts later, in bout 12, cruiserweight Nathan Ojo contested against Ronny Noa of Cuba. He came out the wrong side of a 4-1 split: 27:30, 28:29, 29:28
27:30, 27:30.

Jim, Nathan, Laura and Dearbhla will receive their medals on Saturday; Lee’s will be bestowed on Friday.
