Semi-Finals: Women’s European Championships

Team Ireland’s Women’s European Championship semi-final opponents are now known.

This is an historic Championships for Ireland – 7 boxers have won through to podium places, beating the record set in 2019 of 3 medal finishes.

Today is a rest day at the tournament in Budva, Montenegro, and semi-finals will be boxed on Friday. The afternoon session begins at 1pm, Irish time, and the evening session begins at 4.30pm.

First between the ropes tomorrow will be 48kg Shannon Sweeney, St. Anne’s, Mayo, She will contest against Bulgaria’s Sevda Asenova in the opening bout of the afternoon session.

In bout 5 of the same session, at around 2.15pm, Olympian and Commonwealth Games champion, 57kg Micheala Walsh of Emerald BC, Belfast, meets Italy’s Irma Testa.

In bout 8, at approximately 3pm, World Champion Amy Broadhurst contests her semi final against Croatia’s Sara Beram.

In bout 10, at around 4pm, former European medallist, 70kg Tina Desmond Dungarvan BC/Garda BC, takes on Italy’s Melissa Gemini.

In the opening bout of the evening session, at 4.30pm, 50kg Caitlin Fryers meets Azerbaijan’s Anakhanim Ismayilova.

In bout 6, at approximately 5.45pm, Olympic champion Kellie Harrington contests against Kosovo’s Donjeta Sadiku.

In bout 10, at around 6.30pm, Olympian Aoife O’Rourke, takes on Love Holgersson of Sweden.

Historic: 7 Team Ireland Boxers Through To Women’s Europeans Semi-Finals.

A record-breaking 7 Team Ireland boxers have claimed podium places at the Women’s European Championships.

The previous record, set in 2019, was three.

In today’s second day of Quarter Finals, 50kg Caitlin Fryers was first up – she contested against Bulgaria’s Zlatislava Chukanova in bout 2 of the afternoon session. It was a turbulent bout, but Caitlin claimed at least bronze with a 3-2 win, 30:27, 28:29, 28:29, 29:28, 30:27. In bout 12, reigning Olympic lightweight champ, Kellie Harrington, met England’s Shona Whitwell in a well contested bout – Kellie claimed victory in a 3-2 split, and progresses to the semi-finals – the judges scored the bout 27:30, 29:28, 27:30, 27:30
29:28.

Welterweight, Kaci Rock, openned proceedings in the evening session, against Germany’s Stefanie von Berge. Kaci battled valiantly, but the 5-0 decision went to her opponent, 27:30, 29:28, 27:30, 27:30
29:28. Olympian, 75kg Aoife O’Rourke met Turkey’s Busra Isildar in bout 8. Aoife came away with a 4-1 win -28:29, 29:28, 27:30, 27:30, 27:30.

A record four boxers claimed at least bronze yesterday, in the first day of Quarter Finals – 48kg Shannon Sweeney, 57kg Micheala Walsh, 63kg World Champion Amy Broadhurst and 70kg Tina Desmond.

The tournament is on a rest day on Thursday. Semi finals will be boxed on Friday, and finals on Saturday.

Bouts are being streamed on the EUBC’s YouTube channel, and links for viewing on Friday will issue closer to boxing.

The team will land at Dublin Airport’s Terminal 1 at 15:50hrs on Sunday afternoon.

An historic day for Team Ireland at the Women’s European Championship in Budva, Montenegro.

48kg Shannon Sweeney was the first Irish boxers in action on the first day of Quarter Finals – taking on Slovakia’s Nicole Durikova. Shannon made short work of the bout, secured at least a bronze medal and a semi-final berth following an RSC R2.

Next up was 52kg Carly McNaul, who contested against Italy’s Olena Savchuk in her QF in bout 8 of the same session. Carly boxed valiantly and left it all in the ring but it wasn’t to be – the 3-2 decision went to her opponent: 28:29, 29:28, 27:30, 27:30, 29:28. 57kg Micheala Walsh met Romania’s Claudia Nechita in bout 10 and claimed a 4-1 and bronze. The judges scored the bout 29:28, 26:30, 27:30, 27:30, 28:29.

In the evening session, 63kg World Champion Amy Broadhurst made it two RSC wins for Team Ireland – this time over Serbia’s Milena Matovic. Echoing Shannon, the bout was stopped in Amy’s favour in the second round.

70kg Tina Desmond now has two European medals under her belt, following a 5-0 win over Sweden’s Hanna Ingrid Malena Hede. The final score: 25:30, 26:30, 26:30, 26:30, 26:30.
