ELITE OPEN LEAGUES NOTICE

NATIONAL SENIOR AND ELITE OPEN LEAGUE 2020

The IABA is introducing a new league programme for all male and female boxers born between 1980 and 2001. This league format will allow interested boxers to be kept active with competitive contests and leave themselves open for selection for Internationals organised by the Central Council of the IABA.

Previously boxers at this level may not have got many competitive bouts from one championships to the next, and hence the need for this league.

The format will mean that if eight boxers enter at a weight, then each individual will potentially get seven contests.

Venue:            National Stadium, Dublin

Weights:         Male – 49, 52, 57, 60, 63, 69, 75, 81, 91, 91+KG

                        Female – 48, 51, 54, 57, 60, 64, 69, 75, 80, 80+KG

Age:                Boxers born between 1980 and 2001 inclusive,

Entry fee:       €10 per boxer with completed application form

Boxing:           Friday, 24th January, 7pm. Other dates/times are contingent on entries

Duration:       All rounds are 3 X 3 minutes for male and female contests

Male boxer must be clean shaven on entering the ring

Female boxers must have signed their non pregnancy declaration form before contests

Attire: All boxers must have one red and one blue vest. Boxers must not wear long sleeved tops under their vests. Hair must be tied back and swimming hats or hair nets must be worn under the headgear for female boxers. No red, orange or pink gum shields are allowed.

Coaches: They must wear tracksuits and runners at all sessions and endeavour to set a high standard of hygiene in the corners. No shorts, caps or hats will be allowed.

Sportsmanship: All decisions must be accepted in a sporting manner. Any complaints must be addressed to the Chief Official, Mr Stephen Connolly. Please show respect to all Ringside Officials. Any person making disparaging comments about boxers, officials and/or other IABA members, will be dealt with under the disciplinary code. Please remember, nobody intentionally goes out to make a mistake – we are all human.

Please note that under AIBA rules, boxers who are engaged in ‘Other Physical Contact Sports’ are not eligible to compete. For more information on this, please visit www.aiba.org

Please note, this is an open class league and all boxers entering must then make themselves available to box. The three strikes and your out rule will apply. Any boxer who fails to fulfil a required contest on three separate occasions will be removed from the league.

The application form is available via the attached links and fees can be paid by contacting Sally at the National Boxing Stadium 01-453 3371

NATIONAL U/18 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Steve Cairns and Matthew Tyndall meet in what could be the bout of the weekend in the opening session of the National U/18 Championships at the National Stadium on Friday evening.

Both athletes go head-to-head at 64kg for a place in the last four, with Patrick Donovan and James McDonagh and David Nevin and Sean Roche clashing in the other light-welterweight deciders

Tyndall, an eight-time Irish champion, knows Cairns, a seven-time Irish titlist and European medallist, well and anticipates a cracking Dublin versus Cork showdown.

“I’m looking forward to this one. I have trained very hard for this Championships. Myself and Steven know each other very well and it should be a great fight,” he said.

“It will be a great fight with a good friend; really looking forward to it,” remarked Cairns.

Culainn Sheedy and Oskar Slorrupski get the first national tournament of the New Year underway in the lightweight division.

Four of the winners (one has received a walkover) in the 60kg class will be back in action Saturday, as will the bantamweights and welters.

William Hayden or Luka Gureshidze, contingent on who emerges from this particular head-to-head Friday, will be between the ropes twice this weekend – and Hayden is looking on each contest as a gold medal match.

“I’m delighted with how my training is going. I’m feeling strong and sharp. I’m confident that I’ll have no problems with the fight on Friday, but I’m still going to treat every fight like it’s the finals,” he said.

Thirty-four bouts are slated for completion this weekend, and IABA President Dom O’Rourke is predicting some top-class encounters.

“There’s a lot of very talented young boxers coming through, and there’s some very evenly matched bouts,” he said.

“There’s also a lot of European medallists and Irish champions. It’s going to be a very competitive start to the year for Irish boxing.

“We’re very much looking forward to it and the best of luck to all the athletes, coaches and clubs at the National Stadium this weekend and throughout the tournament.”

The IABA is using the National U/18s to assist with their selection process for the European Youths in Budva, Montenegro in April.
