SUNDAY’S SCHOOLBOY TRAINING CANCELLED

Squad Training for Schoolboys tomorrow is cancelled due to deteriorating weather conditions.

“The safety of boxers and coaches/parents travelling is paramount and for this reason, no training will take place,” said Paddy Gallagher.

Training for all schoolboy boxers will recommence after Christmas and the Elite Schoolboys.

Coaching staff want to wish all our boxers, their families and coaches a very happy Christmas and prosperous new year.

AIBA 2017 WORLD RANKINGS

Joe Ward finds the target

Eleven Irish boxers will finish out the year included in the AIBA World rankings.

Kellie Harrington and Rio 2016 Olympian Joe Ward, both World Elite finalists, are the highest ranked Irish boxers.

Harrington, who has moved down to light, is No. 2 at light-welter, and current European champion Ward is No.4 at light-heavy.

Grainne Walsh is at No. 6 at welter and Rio 2016 Olympian Steven Donnelly at No. 14 at the same limit, while Brendan Irvine, also a Rio 2016 Olympian, is No. 19 at flyweight.

The 2017 men’s rankings were updated last September and the women’s last July.

Cork’s Christina Desmond is in 20th position in the middle class, but the position should be No. 19 as Claressa Shields of the USA, the No.1, has turned pro.

The rankings are based on performances over a two-year rolling period at the Olympics and World and Continental Championships and multi-sports events (i.e. the European Games).

Boxers moving weights retain 75% of their points.

DUBLIN TO HOST INTERNATIONAL FOUR-NATIONS YOUTHS

The Dublin County Boxing Board will be hosting a Four Nations Youth Boxing Tournament this weekend Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th December.

The visiting teams will be from St. Petersburg Russia, NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia) Region Germany and the Leinster Development Squad.

The boxing will take place in St. Joseph’s Boys FC, Pearse Park, Sallynoggin, Co. Dublin.

JP Kinsella, who is one of the organisers of the event, believes it will be a world-class tournament.

He said: “The Dublin Coaching Committee have targeted development for Dublin U18s boxers, in this team of 10 boxers we have really promising young lads. We needed to get them some international experience, and really hope these two tough bouts will put the boys in good preparation for the upcoming All Ireland U18s in January.

“It doesn’t get much harder than boxing powerhouses such as Russia & Germany, we are delighted to have them come to us. We hope this will secure the future for Dublin U18s boxing for next 4 years, the Russians & Germans would like to host the same Tournament next year & future years – which is brilliant”.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our friends in Leinster Boxing in particular Mick Darby who stepped in last week with a full team, as our 4th team had pulled out due to regional tournaments overrun.”
