FRYERS JOINS PHELAN AND REILLY IN WORLD YOUTH Q/FINALS

Members of Irish squad in India

Catlin Fryers will box for at least bronze at the World Women’s Youth Championships in Guwahati, India tomorrow.

But Labhaoise Clarke, Mary Geraghty and Marguerita Nevin are out of the tournament following a pair of split decision and bad luck with an injury.

Fryers produced a top-notch performance in seeing off Tajikistan’s Sumaiya Kosimova in the light-fly class.

The Tajik, a Children of Asia Games bronze medallist, received a public warning for holding, but the sanction was academic, as Fryers, who also won Monday, would have taken a majority of the five judges with her either way.

Clarke was retired at the end of the second round with a hand injury against Mongolia’s World Junior bronze medallist, Namuun Monkhor, at 57kg.

Both Nevin and Geraghty were edged on 3-2 and 4-1 split decisions by Poland’s Klaudia Budasz and Germany’s Marie Bachmaier in all European light and bantam deciders.

Fryers, Katelynn Phelan and Shannon Kelly are back between the ropes tomorrow versus the USA and Russia. Any win at this point will guarantee at least bronze.

REILLY AND FRYERS ADVANCE IN INDIA

Members of Irish squad in India

Shannon Reilly beat England’s current European Youth champion Olivia Hussey in a thriller to book her ticket into the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Youth Championships in Guwahati,India today.

The Bray BC welter edged Hussey, who shaded Reilly on a 3-2 split in the quarter-finals en route to gold at the European earlier this year, after returning the compliment on a 3-2 split decision this afternoon.

Earlier, Caitlin Fryers impressively advanced after beating Japanese light-fly Nasu Misaki 30-27,30-27,30-27,29-28,29-28.

But Lauren Kelly bowed out on a unanimous decision to Ya Chun-Yang of Chinese Taipei.

Irish team manager Anna Moore hailed the performances of all three Irish athletes.

Fryers is back between the ropes tomorrow along with Mary Geraghty, Labhaoise Clarke and Marguerita Nevin.

Reilly, following her heroics against one of the top seeds, joins Katelynn Phelan in the last-eight.
