WORLD YOUTH SEMI- FINALS INDIA

Irish World Youth squad

Irish boxing is gearing up for another key weekend in top international competition.

Katelynn Phelan and Caitlin Fryers are between the ropes in the semi-finals of the World Women’s Youth Championships in Guwahati,India.

Phelan, a 2015 European Junior bronze medallist, is first up Friday and will be aiming to upgrade her guaranteed bronze to at least silver versus Ekaterina Dynnik.

The Russian light-welter claimed silver and bronze at the 2016 and 2017 European Youths and gold and bronze at the 2015 European and World Junior Championships.

She edged out Ireland’s Shauna O’Callaghan in the 2015 European Junior final in Hungary and in the 2015 World Junior quarter-final in Chinese-Taipei, winning 2-1 on split decisions on both occasions.

Fryers, a European Youth and Junior silver and bronze medallist, meets Zhazira Urakbayeva of Kazakhstan in Saturday’s light-fly semi-final.

The Kazakh secured bronze at the 2015 World Juniors and reached the Ahmert Comert Youth final in Turkey earlier this year.

Please click here for Friday’s schedule. Saturday’s program has yet to be published.

The Irish squad trained this afternoon ahead of the weekend’s last-four deciders. 19 nations are represented in the semi-finals.

Meantime, Irish boxing has now won 29 medals in World and European level at all levels – male and female – from Elite to Junior/Schoolboy since June of this year.

The colour of two of those medals will be determined this weekend in the final World and European outing of 2017 for Irish boxing.

FRYERS AND PHELAN INTO SEMI-FINALS AT WORLD YOUTHS

Irish squad in India

IRELAND ASSURED OF TWO BRONZE AT WORLD YOUTHS

Katelynn Phelan guaranteed Ireland a first bronze medal at the World Women’s Youth Championships in Guwahati, India after a thrilling win over Aidyl Cardenas this morning.

The Kildare light-welter beat the American in the 64kg quarter-final to book her ticket into the last-four.

Proud dad, Paddy Phelan, coach at the St Brigid’s BC, was at ringside to watch his daughter advance to the semi-finals.

Caitlin Fryers added a second bronze to the collection after a well-deserved win over Russia’s Karina Tuvakova this afternoon.

The Belfast light-fly, who has claimed three wins in India this week, beat the 2015 World Junior bronze medallist on a split decision.

Shannon Reilly was aiming to make it a hat-trick for Ireland in the welter class.

But the Irish welter, despite another massive performance, was outpointed by Citalli Ortiz of the USA.

Irish team manager Anna Moore described the performances of the Irish trio as magnificent.

Tomorrow is a rest day at the tournament with the semi-finals due to be decided on Friday and Saturday. The finals will be held Sunday.
