
Team Ireland will return home from the 2024 European Junior Championships with 2 gold medals, 5 bronze, a Best Male Boxer trophy and having finishing 3rd in the countries medals table.
Two boxers, Edward Harty and John Donoghue, contested finals today.
First between the ropes was 63kg Edward Harty of Portlaoise BC. He contested against Armenia’s Aleks Petrosayan. Edward was dominant and decisive throughout the bout, and claimed gold on a 4-1 split decision. Judges scores have yet to be released by the EUBC.
57kg Kayleigh Byrne of Gorey BC, 63kg Kaysie Joyce of Clonmel BC, 66kg Cassie Henderson of Phoenix, 50kg Kalib Walsh, Wexford CBS and 52kg Eddie Corcoran, Olympic BC were all awarded their bronze medals today.
66kg John Donoghue boxed for gold in one of the last bouts of the tournament, also against Armenia opposition, in the form of Artyo Stepanyan. This was a tumultuous bout, with a John giving 2 standing counts in the third round. This is his second Category A title in 7 months. He claimed World Junior gold in December.
370 boxer contested the championships. 28 federations, in all, are competed at the tournament: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, England, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey.
The team will arrive land at Dublin Airport from Frankfurt at 2215hrs on Monday evening.
