WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Team Ireland go into intensive training camp at the High-Performance Centre in Abbotstown early next week ahead of the opening bell for the AIBA World Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships in Hungary.

The IABA have named an 11-strong panel for the tournament which begins in Budapest on August 21.

Five of the squad – Daina Moorehouse, Caitlin Fryers, Jude Gallagher, Brandon McCarthy and Callum Walsh – are in action in Friday’s National U/18 finals at the Stadium.

Rebel County light-welter Walsh, a European Junior champion, meets Sacred Heart BC (Dublin) stand out Eric Byrne aiming for his 6th Irish belt.

“I’ll just have to stick to my game plan and get the job done. Winning my 6th Irish title would be a good confidence boost for the Worlds,” said the Cork teen (Riverstown BC).

Ireland go into training camp next Tuesday.

“We’re looking forward to getting the squad in after and getting a good training camp under our belts ahead of what will be a very tough and competitive tournament in Hungary,” said head coach Billy McClean.

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) yesterday marked the 30-day milestone to the start of the inaugural Men’s and Women’s World Youths.

The AIBA announced in June that they were increasing quotas for Budapest from 244 to 300 for males and 174 to 200 for females.

“The next generation of boxing talents will be competing in the 5’000-capacity Duna Arena in pursuit of gold,” said the governing body for AOB boxing.

A new website has been launched for the tournament.

Ireland leave for Budapest on August 18.

NATIONAL U/18 FINALS

Catherine Blaney, Ciara Brien, Caitlin Fryers, Daina Moorehouse, Lauren Kelly and Aoibhe Carabine

Friday’s U/18 showdown between Caitlin Fryers and Jessica Clarke is evenly poised at 1-1 going into the third head-to-head between the talented pair.

The Immaculata BC and Cardonagh BC stand outs clash over three rounds for the flyweight  belt in one of 19 finals at Dublin’s National Stadium.

Clarke has previously beaten Fryers in the Ulster Championships but Fryers evened the score at the Irish Nationals.

“I fancy Caitlin strongly to win, I really do,” Immaculata BC coach Alfredo Meli told today’s Irish News.

Fryers claimed World Youth bronze last year and is included in an 11-strong Irish squad for next month’s World Men’s and Women’s Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

“She is a really hard trainer and a great asset to the club. She is a great kid, working over the summer and is hoping to start university at Jordanstown soon,” added Meli.

Fryers will be aiming to finish out her last year in Youth boxing on a high-note before targeting Senior belts.

“We were talking the other day and she was saying she would like a crack at the Intermediates before going into the Elites,” said Meli.
