Super Six: Team Ireland claim 6 World Youth Championship medals.

2 more boxers have added to Team Ireland’s record breaking World Youth Championships group of medalists, bringing the total to a Super Six.

Lightweight Lee McEvoy was back in action, for his fourth bout of the tournament today, he met Carlos Jamil De Leon Castro of Puerto Rico and claimed at least a bronze with a 4-1 split decision win.

Featherweight, Rebecca Kavanagh, took on England’s Emily Whitworth in bout 5 of Ring B’s afternoon session and the decision didn’t go her way – she’s had a great tournament, with wins against Italy and Japan.

Heavyweight Cliona D’arcy made her tournament debut against Lithuania’sAglinskaite Kamile and becomes a 2022 World and European medalists following a 5-0 win.

They join Team Co-Captain, welter Jim Donovan , cruiserweight Nathan Ojo, Team Co-Captain, light heavy Dearbhla Tinnelly, a 2022 World and European medallist and light middle Laura Moran – Laura, too, is now a 2022 European and World medallist.

History-Makers

This team has made history – they are now the most sucessful ever Irish World Youth Championship team. The previous Team Ireland record-setters at the tournament was the 2008 squad. The tournament in that year took place in Mexico, and Ireland came home with four medals:

All 6 Team Ireland boxers will contest their semis tomorrow.

In Ring A’s afternoon session, light heavy, Team Co-Captain Dearbhla Tinnelly boxes England’s Amber Birch. In bout 9, lightweight Lee McEvoy boxes for a place in the finals against Georgia’s Gocha Gordulava.

In Ring B’s afternoon session, light middle Laura Moran takes on Uzbekistan’s Aziza Zokirova in bout 5. In bout 10, Team Co-Captain, welter Jim Donovan, meets Kazakhstan’s Nurkeb Mursal. Two bouts later, in bout 12, cruiserweight Nathan Ojo contests against Ronny Noa of Cuba.
