Job Summary

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association has been delivering consistent international success in the ring and is the most successful Olympic sport in Ireland. To assist our Development Team to continue its drive towards sustaining success, the IABA is seeking to appoint an Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Officer for its Development Team on a fixed-term basis. This full-time position is of strategic importance to the IABA in achieving its strategic development programmes goals and enhancing existing professional structures. Reporting directly to the National Development Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for Project Management, Event Management, Programme Delivery & Policy Development.

Overall Purpose of Position

To assist the Irish Athletic Boxing Association in achieving its core objectives of:

  • Additional Needs Inclusion – Project management within IABA’s Initiative; ‘High Five’ programme. Delivering on programmes and initiatives to increase opportunities for people with additional needs.
  • Facilitate training and capacity building within clubs and communities thereby developing sustainable local leadership for boxing within communities.

Specific Responsibilities:

Reporting to the National Development Manager of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association and designated stakeholders, the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Officer will have responsibility for the implementation of current and future development programmes of the IABA and identified stakeholders including:

Programmes:   

  • Engage with communities and target groups by consulting with participants and local partners to assess needs and develop sustainable approaches to providing participation opportunities.
  • Identify key stakeholders including Sport Ireland and Active Disability Ireland and community host organisations to ensure engagement across the community and involvement with relevant target groups.
  • Planning, organising, and active implementation of school, community & club participation programmes.
  • Actively recruit, retain, and develop club members at all stages of life.
  • Promote positive relationships between all programme partners.
  • Assist in the development of current and future programmes as required.
  • To undertake further training as required.
  • To deliver training & workshops to develop local capacity to deliver sustainable boxing programmes.

Strategic Development:

  • Represent the IABA and relevant stakeholders as required.
  • Assist in strategic working groups as required and directed by the National Development Manager of the IABA and nominated areas.
  • Assist the relevant stakeholders in matters relating to the development of sport in identified areas.
  • Develop relevant strategies for engaging targeted populations.

Management Processes:

  • Adhere to all management processes as directed by the National Development Manager of the IABA or persons nominated by them.
  • An agreed annual work programme must be submitted to the National Operations Manager of the IABA and identified stakeholders.
  • Supply regular reports on dates outlined by the National Development Manager of the IABA or persons nominated by them.
  • Strictly adhere to procedures outlined by National Development Manager of the IABA in relation to any financial matters.

Promotion of Boxing:

  • Working in cooperation with all stakeholders in the identified areas to promote boxing.
  • Represent the IABA at representative meetings regarding the development of inclusive boxing programmes.
  • Identifying and assisting local community initiatives which may benefit the development of boxing.
  • Identifying sources and assist in applying for funding available for inclusive boxing development.
  • Liaising with local media and the National Communications Officer to promote inclusive boxing.

General Responsibilities:

  • To enhance and increase the profile of inclusive boxing in the community.
  • Comply and actively promote IABA’s policies and procedures as directed.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time in accordance with the general nature of the post.

Qualifications & Experience:

 Essential  Desirable
Qualifications  Minimum Irish National Framework (NFQ 6)  Coaching qualifications/experience in coordinating sport or exercise programmes to a broad range of targeted populations.
Experience  A minimum of 18 months relevant experience in project management and planning, co-ordinating and delivering EDI sport programmes. Experience of the community and voluntary sector and/or the sports and recreation environment. Experience of motivating those cohorts within the applicable section with lower participation characteristics to become involved.Experience working in sports administration and/or organising training events.Programme monitoring and evaluation experience.Experience working in a project team.

Required post-appointment action:

The successful candidate, on taking up their position will be required to:

  1. Undergo Garda Vetting/Access NI checks through the IABA; this will be the case even if the successful candidate has been Garda Vetted/Access NI checked through another organisation or sector.
  2. Undertake IABA Fundamentals: Assistant Coach certification. Whilst this is not a coaching role, it is desirable that the successful candidate has a foundational level of boxing technical and boxing coaching knowledge, as this will assist in the commission of their duties.
  3. Undergo Safeguarding One learning.

Rounds: Boxing will be 3 x 2-minute rounds.

Entries: Only those sent by the Secretaries of the Provincial Councils and of the Antrim and Dublin County Boards shall be accepted. Entries must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 12th April.

At the conclusion of the Unit Championships, details of names, club, age ( Junior 2 ) and weights for the Irish Championships must be sent by email to sally@iaba.ie and to Phillip Rooney at boxing.referee@hotmail.com  

Entry Fee: A €15 entry fee applies. This fee will be collected from all boxers at the weigh-in on their first day of boxing. Boxers must also give their Boxing Record Book to National Registrar and Chief Official Phillip Rooney at their initial weigh-in.

Anti-Doping: Boxers must provide details of any medication they are taking or have taken in the preceding 4 weeks. Anti-Doping may be carried out at any stage of the competition.

Attire:  Coaches must wear tracksuits and runners in their corners at all sessions and endeavour to set a high standard of hygiene. No Shorts, Caps or Hats are allowed.

N.B. It is a condition of entry that all boxers and their clubs have signed and submitted the Members Acknowledgement Form and it is the responsibility of the entering unit that this stipulation is complied with. 

Gumshields: Red/Orange/Pink or variations of these colours are not allowed. Hair must be tied back, and swimming hats or hairnets should be worn under the headgear for boxers with long hair.  

Sportsmanship: All decisions must be accepted in a sporting manner. Any complaints must be addressed to the Chief Official, Mr. Philip Rooney. Please show respect to all Ringside Officials

Ireland team to contest the 2024 European Championships named.

An 11-strong Ireland team will contest the 2024 European Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, from April 15th.

The team includes Paris Olympics qualified boxers, reigning lightweight champ Kellie Harrington, double Olympians Michaela Walsh (57kg) and Aoife O’Rourke (75g); 63.5kg Dean Clancy and heavyweight, Jack Marley.

High Performance Director, Tricia Heberle, says “This is a very strong team, fresh from a dual-nations camp with Ukraine, which culminated in an International – Ireland won 10:2. While this is an Olympic preparatory tournament for boxers already qualified for the Games, it is vital performance and carding opportunity for all team members. ”

High Performance Head Coach, Zauri Antia, says “This will be a very tough tournament, as many federations will use this championship to prepare for Paris. There will be no easy wins but every boxer on the team is prepared, is focused, and knows their goals.”

Ireland has won a total of 76 medals at European Championships since 1925, including 25 gold. Ireland’s men stand 10th in the overall medals table of 47 countries. Ireland’s women are 5th in the medals table, out of 30 countries.

The team travels to Serbia with the support of Sport Ireland and the Institute of Sport, in the form of Team Doctor, SI’s Dr. Valerie Hayes.

Over 30 federations are expected to contest the championships. The draw takes place on April 18th; April 26th is a rest day, and finals will be boxed on April 28th.

Prize money will be awarded in all weight categories, from quarter finalists to champions. Those finishing at the QF stage will receive $1,000; bronze medalists will be awarded $5,000 apiece. Winning silver means a $10,000 award, and champions will get $15,000.

Work in Boxing: National Membership Services Manager.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) is the governing body of Ireland’s most successful Olympic Sport, and is home to 400 clubs, county boards and provincial units.

We are seeking a dynamic and results-oriented Membership Services Manager to join our team to lead the implementation of our membership plan and roadmap, alongside the CEO. The ideal candidate will be passionate about membership, highly creative, and possess excellent management and planning skills.

This role will require a multi-tasker who has strong organizational and communication effective planning, CRM and project management experience, proficient computer literacy and a willingness to take on a range of administrative tasks to raise to gold standard IABA’s services to members.

Role PurposeThe role will be responsible for managing, developing and enhancing the day to day running of Membership Services to ensure all those engaging with IABA have a first-class experience. Person SpecificationEssential:  Minimum two years’ experience in managing, developing, and enhancing membership, volunteer, or customer services.  Understanding and awareness of individual and club membership within a sporting environment.  A minimum of one year’s project management experience, to drive the establishment of a new CRM Experience in setting goals, targets and measures, and subsequent implementation plans, particularly in relation to commercialisation & CRM development Comfortable operating in a fast-changing and challenging environment with excellent people / relationship management skills and the ability to influence and engage.  Track record in the successful management of budgets, volunteers and staff including their ongoing development.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Along with appropriate IT skills, specifically Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.    Experience of writing high-level reports, policies and strategies, particularly in relation to the practical implementation of good governance within a national sporting or third sector organisation Experience using insight and research methods to help better understand customer or membership behaviour, and apply learnings to improve future work A demonstratable understanding of the need to co-produce / collaborate with stakeholders and impact of same.
Person SpecificationDesirable:  Knowledge of amateur boxing, including technical rules and competitions.  Be able to demonstrate creativity and the instigation and production of innovative and cost-effective development programmes.  A degree in a relevant subject. Hold a full Driving Licence and access to a vehicle. The role may require travel throughout the country for meetings/events and work unsocial hours including evenings and weekends (as required).

Hours of Work

40 hours per week, with flexible scheduling of hours. 

The employee will not normally receive any additional payment for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week, but may be permitted to take time off in lieu of such excess hours worked, if agreed with the line manager.

Annual Leave

The association’s leave year runs from January 1st to December 31st. The employee will be entitled to pro-rata 21 days leave per annum plus 10 statutory bank holidays. Excess hours can be taken during a holiday period, after agreement with your line manager.

The employee is required to retain a minimum of 3 days leave to cover the Association’s Christmas shutdown period.

Ireland win 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze at the European Youth Championship.

Ireland will return from the European Youth Championships in Porec, Croatia with 3 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronze medal – and the 3rd place team trophy.

52kg Grace Conway Dowling, of Tredagh BC, Louth, was up on Sunday, contesting against Taisiia Pokusai of Ukraine. Grace showed great skill and pluck in a testy bout – and faced an agonising wait for the decision, when a bout review was instituted. The 5-2 decision was in favour of Pokusai. Grace comes home with silver following an excellent tournament.

Team Co-Captain 63kg Ava Henry, of Dublin Docklands BC, stepped between the ropes in Bout 6, against Ukraine’s Yulia Stupakova. Ava was dominant from the first bell, and throughout the bout. She became a two time European gold medalist when the 5-0 result for the boxer in blue was announced. Ava’s first European gold came at the 2022 European Junior Championships. In the subsequent bout, 66kg Kyla Doyle Byrne of Whitechurch BC, Dublin took on Romania’s Amalia Tugui – and again, faced a long wait after the last bell to find out her fate after a bout review. The 5-2 decision declared her a European champion. Team Co-Captain, 92+kg Adam Olaniyan, had to wait until the last bout of the tournament to box for gold – he contest in Bout 13 of the Evening Session, against Armenia’s Misak Tepanyan. Adam was assured, throughout, and the more skillful boxer. His was a 5-0 win.

Bestowed with their bronze medals today were 71kg Tadgh O’Donnell and 63.5kg Ryan Jenkins.

33 countries and 330 boxers are contesting the competition, in Porec, Croatia. Participation federations are Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, IBA – B, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.

Ireland has a highly successful recent history at the tournament – the 2022 team won more medals at this competition that any other Team Ireland Youth squad contesting a European level tournament. They came home with 3 gold for Team Co-Captain, 71kg Bobbi Flood, 81kg Dearbhla Tinnelly and 81+kg Cliona D’arcy, a silver for 70kg Laura Moran and 3 bronze for 48kg boxers Georgia Dunn McGovern and Patsy Joyce, 50kg Katie O’Keeffe, and 63kg Winnie McDonagh.
