4 Ireland boxers contest European Youth Championship finals today.

4 Ireland boxers have won through to the European Youth Championship Finals, and will box for gold today.

52kg Grace Conway Dowling is first up on Sunday, contesting in Bout 3 of the Afternoon Session – she fights for gold against Taisiia Pokusai of Ukraine. Team Co-Captain 63kg Ava Henry steps between the ropes in Bout 6, against Ukraine’s Yulia Stupakova. In the subsequent bout, 66kg Kyla Doyle Byrne takes on Romania’s Amalia Tugui.

Team Co-Captain, 92+kg Adam Olaniyan, will have to wait until the last bout of the tournament to box for gold – he’ll contest in Bout 13 of the Evening Session, against Armenia’s Misak Tepanyan

Today’s Afternoon Session will begin at 11am, Irish time. The Evening Session begins at 4pm.

Coming home with bronze medals after excellent campaigns are 71kg Tadgh O’Donnell and 63.5kg Ryan Jenkins.

33 countries and 330 boxers are contesting the competition, in Porec, Croatia. Participation federations are Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, IBA – B, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine.

Ireland has a highly successful recent history at the tournament – the 2022 team won more medals at this competition that any other Team Ireland Youth squad contesting a European level tournament. They came home with 3 gold for Team Co-Captain, 71kg Bobbi Flood, 81kg Dearbhla Tinnelly and 81+kg Cliona D’arcy, a silver for 70kg Laura Moran and 3 bronze for 48kg boxers Georgia Dunn McGovern and Patsy Joyce, 50kg Katie O’Keeffe, and 63kg Winnie McDonagh.

Entries are now open for the 2024 National Senior Cadet Championship, for boxers born in 2008 and 2009.

Lighter weights will be accommodated – clubs submitting entries via Blocworx for boxers weighing under 44kg are asked to submit their entries in the 40kg-44kg category. IABA staff will make contact with the club directly on close of entries to confirm the precise weight at which the boxer will compete.

As part of the waiver/code of conduct process, clubs will be required to submit an email address for the boxer’s parent/guardian. Completion of this process by parents/guardians is a condition of entry – it is available here

Competition Arrangements:

Venue:                                    National Stadium, Dublin.

Dates:                                     April 26th, 27th, 28th – May 03rd,  04th , 05th ,    

Entries:                                  A non–refundable entry fee of €20 applies, including in the event of a boxer withdrawal.  Online entry, via the Blocworx portal, is open until 5pm sharp, on Friday, April 19th. Entries will not be accepted without the payment of entry fees. All fees must be paid by 5pm on April 19th. Only boxers for whom entries have been completed and entry fees have been received will be allowed to box.

As the Cadet championships form a basis for team selection to an International competition, please be aware that all entrants must hold a current an Irish passport, with at least 6 months remaining to expiry

Entry Form:                          Affiliated clubs wishing to enter boxers into the championships must log-in to their Blocworx portal, using their unique username and password. Attention is drawn to the following IABA rule –

A club shall not include in its list of members the name of any person who is a member of any other club.  Accordingly, any club making an entry to the Senior Cadet championships affirms that the entrant is not a member of any other club, in any jurisdiction.

Weigh-in and Medical:        Boxers will weigh only on the day they box. Individual weigh-in times may be given to participants, but this will be decided and made known prior to the event. Boxing Record books to be presented by the boxer at their initial weigh-in.

Weigh-in Times: In National Stadium 8:00 to 9:00am & 12:00pm to 1:00pm.

Boxing:           Times will be contingent on entries and shall be announced after the draw.

Waiver & Code of Conduct: It is a condition of entry/participation that the parents/guardians of all competitors completed the online Waiver/Code of Conduct process, which includes key safeguarding elements for competitions.

It is a condition of participation that all officials have completed the Waiver/Members Acknowledgement form adhere to any agreement made with the Association sponsors.

Anti-Doping may be carried out at any stage of the championships and all boxers must advise the doctor of any medication they are taking or have taken in the preceding 4 weeks. It is imperative that all boxers adhere to the Anti-Doping Rules and Regulations. Non-Pregnancy Declaration forms must be signed by the boxer and their parent/guardian

Attire: Boxers shall have one red and one blue vest. Hair must be tied back, and swimming hats or hairnets should be worn under the headgear for boxers with long hair. No red, orange or pink gum shields are allowed.

Coaches: They must wear track suitsandrunners at all sessions and endeavour to set a high standard of hygiene in the corners. No shorts, caps or hats are allowed.  Only qualified coaches are permitted in corners.

Sportsmanship: All decisions must be accepted in a sporting manner. Any complaints must be addressed to the Chief Official, Mr. Philip Rooney. Please show respect to all Ringside Officials

Job Summary

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association has been delivering consistent international success in the ring and is the most successful Olympic sport in Ireland. To assist our Development Team to continue its drive towards sustaining success, the IABA is seeking to appoint a Regional Development Officer for its Development Team on a fixed-term basis. This full-time position is of strategic importance to the IABA in achieving its strategic development programmes goals and enhancing existing professional structures. Reporting directly to the National Development Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of all locally based school, community and club programmes and administration associated with the effective running of the IABA Development Team.

Overall Purpose of Position

To assist the Irish Athletic Boxing Association in achieving its core objectives of:

  • Ensuring delivery of boxing development programmes, to targeted groups, in a variety of settings within the nominated area.
  • Developing partnerships and co-ordination between the relevant internal/external stakeholders and maximizing their involvement in the development of boxing in Ireland.
  • Facilitate training and capacity building within clubs and communities thereby developing sustainable local leadership for boxing within communities.

Specific Responsibilities:

Reporting to the National Development Manager of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association and designated stakeholders, the Regional Development Officer will have responsibility for the implementation of current and future development programmes of the IABA and identified stakeholders including:

Programmes:   

  • Engage with communities and target groups by consulting with participants and local partners to assess needs and develop sustainable approaches to providing participation opportunities.
  • Identify key stakeholders including Galway Sport Partnership and Galway County Boxing Board and community host organisations to ensure engagement across the community and involvement with relevant target groups.
  • Planning, organising, and active implementation of school, community & club participation programmes.
  • Actively recruit, retain, and develop club members at all stages of life.
  • Promote positive relationships between all programme partners.
  • Assist in the development of current and future programmes as required.
  • To undertake further training as required.
  • To deliver training & workshops to develop local capacity to deliver sustainable boxing programmes.

Strategic Development:

  • Represent the IABA and relevant stakeholders as required.
  • Assist in strategic working groups as required and directed by the National Development Manager of the IABA and nominated areas.
  • Assist the relevant stakeholders in matters relating to the development of sport in identified areas.
  • Develop relevant strategies for engaging targeted populations.

Management Processes:

  • Adhere to all management processes as directed by the National Development Manager of the IABA or persons nominated by them.
  • An agreed annual work programme must be submitted to the National Operations Manager of the IABA and identified stakeholders.
  • Supply regular reports on dates outlined by the National Development Manager of the IABA or persons nominated by them.
  • Strictly adhere to procedures outlined by National Development Manager of the IABA in relation to any financial matters.

Promotion of Boxing:

  • Working in cooperation with all stakeholders in the identified areas to promote boxing.
  • Represent the IABA at local meetings regarding the development of boxing programmes.
  • Identifying and assisting local community initiatives which may benefit the development of boxing.
  • Identifying sources and assist in applying for funding available for local boxing development.
  • Liaising with local media and the National Communications Officer to promote boxing locally.

General Responsibilities:

  • To enhance and increase the profile of boxing in the community.
  • Comply and actively promote IABA’s policies and procedures as directed.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time in accordance with the general nature of the post.

Qualifications  Minimum Irish National Framework (NFQ 5).Level 1 sport coaching qualificationSuccessful candidate must undertake IABA Garda Vetting & Safeguarding training.Coaching qualifications/experience in delivering boxing and exercise programmes to a broad range of targeted populations.
Experience  A minimum of one-year relevant experience in project management and planning, co-ordinating and delivering sustainable boxing programmes. Experience of the community and voluntary sector and the sports and recreation environment and of motivating those sectors with lower participation characteristics to become involved.  Experience working in sports administration and/or organising training events.Programme monitoring and evaluation experience.Experience working in a project team.
