BROADHURST AND DESMOND UP NEXT AT WORLD ELITES

Amy Broadhurst will be in action in the early shift at the World Women’s Elites in Ulan-Ude, Siberia tomorrow.

The Dundalk lightweight meets Poland’s Aneta Rygielska at approximately 6.45 am (Irish time) on Wednesday morning for a place in the quarter-finals.

Cork’s Christina Desmond is in against Canada’s Myriam Da Silva in the last 16 in the 2nd session shortly after 12pm (Irish time)

The Quebec welterweight is the No. 5 seed in the 69kg class in Siberia.

Ceire Smith and Michaela Walsh bowed out of the tournament at the last 16 stages to North Korea’s current World Elite flyweight champion Mi Choi Pang and featherweight Liudmila Vorontsova, who is one of three Ulan-Ude boxers on the Russian squad, on split decisions today.

“Close enough fights, I suppose we just came out on the wrong side of them. Two split decisions,” said Bernard Dunne, the IABA High-Performance Director, from Russia.

“Ceire was in with the world number one in a very close bout. Michaela is in the with the home boxer, again being a split, another very close bout. It’s very hard to pick between them. All we can do is ask our guys to perform and give themselves an opportunity of winning and in fairness that’s what they did.

“Two guys (Amy and Christina) are in great shape, great form. They cannot wait for tomorrow.”

SMITH AND WALSH BOW OUT OF WORLD ELITES

Cavan flyweight Ceire Smith and Belfast feather Michaela Walsh bowed out of the World Women’s Elite Championships on split decisions at the Sports Complex in Ulan-Ude, Siberia this morning.

Smith was edged out on a 3-2 split by North Korea’s No. 1 seed Mi Choi Pang.

And Walsh was adjudged to have lost 4-1 – 30-27,30-27,29-28,29-28, 28-29 – to Liudmila Vorontsova of Russia.

Smith had a good first round against Choi Pang, the current World and Asian 51kg champion. The Pyongyang orthodox was on the floor late in the frame but that was ruled a slip.

A pressure fighter, the World No. 1 probably won the second round while neither boxer managed to land a telling blow in the final stanza.

Final scores – 30-27,29-28,29-28 to Choi Pang and 29-28,29-28 to Smith.

Walsh countered well in all three rounds against the aggression of Vorontsova but four of the five judges leaned toward the busy Ulan-Ude native and former European Youth champion.

Dundalk lightweight Amy Broadhurst and Cork welter Christina Desmond are in action in the last 16 tomorrow versus Poland and Canada.

Please click here for Wednesday’s schedule. Ulan-Ude is seven hours ahead of Ireland and local times apply.

HISTORIC IABA CONVENTION CONCLUDES IN MAYO

Please scroll down for results of today’s elections at the 2019 IABA Annual Convention at the Broadhaven Hotel in Belmullet, Co. Mayo.

The new IABA rulebook was unanimously adopted in Belmullet and will be circulated in the coming weeks.

Proceedings began at 11am and were officially opened by Minister Michael Ring. The Assembly was hosted by Connacht and the Geesala Boxing Club as part of their 40th Anniversary celebrations.

Minister Ring, speaking in advance of the occasion, hailed the contribution of boxing to Irish sport.

He said: “It’s a great honour for Belmullet to host the IABA National Boxing Convention.

“The IABA has a proud history and everyone involved in the sport in Ireland can look back over the last 108 years with an enormous sense of pride, particularly in relation to our Olympic successes. Hopefully, there will be more to come in Tokyo next year.

“I know that Councillor Gerry Coyle, father of champion boxer Henry Coyle, is particularly proud that the IABA National Convention is coming to the Erris region.

“The coaching and management structures put in place by the IABA have contributed greatly to producing such world-class boxing talent.”

Fergal Carruth, CEO of the IABA, described the unanimous endorsement of the rulebook as a historic day for Irish boxing.

“It’s very positive for the Association that we are moving forward with a new structure following the unanimous adoption of the new rulebook. A big thank you to Connacht and the Geesalla boxing club for a very well organised, memorable and historic Convention,” he said.

The IABA thanks all who attended and extends best wishes to all incoming officers and members and thanked all those outgoing for their dedication.

BROADHURST INTO LAST 16 AT WORLD ELITES

Irish lightweight Amy Broadhurst progressed to the last 16 of the World Elites on a unanimous decision over Germany’s Maya Kleinhans in Ulan-Ude, Siberia.

Final scores – 30-27,29-28,29-28,29-28,29-28 to Broadhurst.

Broadhurst’s backhand was the key to victory in today’s all southpaw battle versus the tall and rangy German, with the Irish European U/22 champion finding the target with the more solid punches in all three rounds of a tight and tactical contest.

The victory sees Broadhurst join Ceire Smith, Michaela Walsh and Christina Desmond in the last 16 and maintains Ireland’s unbeaten start to the tournament after four bouts.

Broadhurst, who was congratulated by German coach Eddie Bolger who was working Kleinhans’ corner today, will meet Poland’s former World Youth champion Aneta Rygielska on Wednesday for a place in the quarter-finals.

No Irish boxers are in action tomorrow.

Smith and Walsh meet North Korean flyweight Mi Choi Pang, the No. 1 seed in Ulan-Ude, and Russian feather Liudmila Vorontsova on Tuesday.

Broadhurst and Desmond are between the ropes on Wednesday.
