IRELAND AND GERMANY DRAW IN GERMANY

Ireland and Germany shared the honours for a second night after a 10-10 tie in Saalfeld-Rudolstadf last evening.

Both sides drew 10-10 on Friday at the same venue and couldn’t be separated again after another 10-10 result.

Emmet Colgan, the Irish team manager and coach, praised the performance of the Irish team against their talented German counterparts and thanked the hosts for two fantastic nights of boxing and hospitality.

Colgan, Martin Donovan, Kathleen Meli and Nicole Meli were working Ireland’s corner in Germany. Mick Gill was R&J.

In three additional bouts, Irish Elite champion Kieran Molloy recorded his second win of the tour, with victory also for Colm Quinn and a gutsy performance from Rachael Desmond.

The Irish squad are due to arrive home at 10.35pm via Dublin Airport this evening (Terminal 1).

WALSH CRUISES INTO LAST 16 AT WORLD ELITES

Michaela Walsh (red)

Michaela Walsh made it three wins out of three for Ireland at the World Women’s Elites in Ulan-Ude, Siberia today.

The Belfast feather beat Mali’s Carmara Fatoumata on a landslide unanimous decision to join Cavan’s Ceire Smith and Cork’s Christina Desmond in the last 16 in Russia.

Final scores – 30-25,30-25,30-25,30-25,30-26 to Walsh.

The brave but mostly outclassed West African took a standing count in the third from a right with Walsh, occasionally switching to southpaw, repeatedly finding the target with head and body shots and avoiding most of the incoming.

She’s now meet Russia’s Liudmila Vorontsova on Tuesday morning for a place in the quarter-finals.

Ulan-Ude-native Vorontsova beat Germany’s Ramona Graeef today.

Meanwhile, Dundalk lightweight Amy Broadhurst faces top Germany’s Youth prospect Maya Kleinhans in the last 32 tomorrow.

Former Irish coach Eddie Bolger, the current German coach, will be working Kleinhans corner.

DESMOND ADVANCES TO LAST 16 AT WORLD ELITES

Christina Desmond improved Ireland to 2 and 0 at the World Elite Women’s Championships in Ulan-Ude, Siberia today.

The Cork welter beat England’s Commonwealth champion Sandy Ryan on a 4-1 split decision to book her ticket into the last 16.

The Rebel southpaw, whose backhand repeatedly stung the Derby orthodox, won the first round on the unofficial cards, and Ryan, benefiting from a surprise public warning for slapping, claimed the second.

However, Desmond, a former European bronze medallist, put the foot on the gas in the final 30 seconds of a close bout to seal victory and join Ceire Smith in the last 16.

The final scores read 29-27 and 29-27 to Desmond and 29-27 to Ryan and two 28-28, 28-28 scores but when it went back to the judges that marked it even to select a winner they opted for Desmond (4-1).

She’ll now meet Canada’s Myrian Da Silva next Wednesday. The Quebec-native and Pan American finalist is the No. 5 seed in the welter class in Ulan-Ude.

Meanwhile, Belfast feather Michaela Walsh, the No. 5 seed in Ulan-Ude, meets Carmara Fatoumata of Mali for a place in the last 16 tomorrow.

Amy Broadhurst meets Germany’s Maya Kleinhans on Sunday.
