EUROPEAN MEDALS SO FAR IN 2019

Irish boxing improved to 34 medals from four European competitions so far this year at the European Schoolboy/girl Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia last weekend.

The count for 2019 now stands at 6 gold, 9 silver and 19 bronze.

Ireland finished in top ten – top five on three occasions – positions in the medals table at the European U/22s, European Games, European Juniors and European Schoolboy/girls.

Kurt Walker claimed gold at the European Games, an AIBA ranking tournament, in June and current World Elite champion Kellie Harrington and Michaela Walsh took home double silver, with Regan Buckley and Michael Nevin winning double bronze at the 2nd edition of the Games which was also doubling up as the European Men’s Elites.

Amy Broadhurst won the first of Ireland’s six gold medals at the European U/22s on St Patrick’s Day, which is also her birthday, in Russia.

Six of the best

Chloe Gabriel and Michael Donoghue earned a brace of European Junior gold’s and Adam Olaniyan and Caoimhe Kinsella topped their respective podiums at the European Schoolboy/girl Championships in August.

Meanwhile, Irish boxing is gearing up for two final Continental outings at the European Women’s Elites in Madrid, Spain (August 22/September 1) and European Men’s and Women’s Youths in Sofia, Bulgaria (September 1/11).

The World Men’s and Women’s Elite Championships will be decided in Ekaterinburg, Russia (September 7/21) and Ulan-Ude (October 3/13) before the curtain comes down on eight months of intense international competition leading into the Tokyo 2020 qualifiers.

The European qualifiers for the 32nd Olympiad will be hosted at a venue and date to be confirmed in London next Spring. There will be one World qualifier in Japan early next summer.

TEAM IRELAND ARRIVES HOME FROM GEORGIA

The class of 2019 improved Ireland’s all-time European Schoolboy/girl Championships haul to 119 medals in Tbilisi, Georgia over the weekend.

The squad arrived home via Dublin Airport this morning to a very well-attended reception.

The medal count now stands at 19 gold, 31 silver and 69 bronze since the inaugural tournament in Rome in 2003.

Some of the stand out names of Irish boxing, including Beijing 2008 and Rio 2016 Olympians John Joe Joyce, David Oliver Joyce and Joe Ward, have medalled at this level.

Former WBA/IBF champion Carl Frampton reached the 50kg final in Rome 16 years ago.

Female boxing was introduced last year and so far the Girls in Green have secured 20 medals, four of which are gold.

Ireland’s European Schoolboy/girls champions are David Joyce (2003), Willie O’Reilly (2004), Stephen O’Reilly (2004), Michael O’Reilly (2007), Michael McDonagh (2007), John Joyce (2012), Oliver McCarthy (2012), James McGivern (2012), Michael Nevin (2012), Aaron McKenna (2013), Jordan Myers (2013), William Hayden (2016) Jason Myers (2016), Yasmin Meredith (2018), Kaci Crowley (2018) Winne McDonagh (2018), Michael Faulkner (2018), Caoimhe Kinsella (2019) and Adam Olaniyan (2019).

The 2019 squad claimed the most medals but the 2018 team took home the most gold.

Before the tournament doubled up as a male and female competition, the 2012 squad were the best performing side with three gold medals.

Meantime, John Joyce (2010/11), Barry McReynolds (2013/14) and Katie O’Keeffe (2018/19) are Ireland’s two-time European Schoolboy/girl medallists, while Irish boxing has never failed to  medal at this level.

IRELAND FINISH 5TH IN MEDALS TABLE AT EUROPEANS

Team Ireland finished fifth in the medals table and 4th in the rankings table at 30-nation  European Schoolboy/girl Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The tournament concluded this afternoon with Ireland claiming 2 gold, 6 silver and 10 bronze.

Dubin’s Adam Olaniyan and Wexford’s Caoimhe Kinsella won titles in the Georgian capital.

Irish boxing has now won 19th gold medals at this level (schoolgirl boxing was introduced in 2018) since the inaugural tournament at Rome 2003.

The total Irish haul over the last 16 years is 119 medals.

Team Ireland’s medal-laden team are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport at 10 am on Monday morning. (Turkish TK1975 (12 AUG) Istanbul @ 0725 & Dublin @ 1000 (Terminal 1).

All media are invited to attend Monday’s homecoming.

2ND EUROPEAN GOLD CLAIMED IN TBILISI

Wexford’s Caoimhe Kinsella claimed Ireland’s second gold of the European Schoolboy/girl Championships on an inside the distance win in Tbilisi, Georgia today.

But Cork’s Katie O’Keeffe and Dubliners Georgia McGovern and Ava Rose Lyndon had to settle for silver on the last day of competition and a record-breaking week for Irish boxing.

Kinsella recorded an inside the distance win over Turkey’s Gulcan Turgul to top the 38kg podium. Turgul started brightly but Kinsella began to repeatedly find the target with her left, with a few rights thrown into the bargain, and the contest was stopped by the ref in the second round after the brave but outclassed Turkish girl took a second count.

O’Keeffe was agonisingly edged out on a 3-2 split decision for 42kg gold. The Leesider, as she does in every bout, left everything in the ring, in a high tempo, slugfest with Aurika Kostrytska, but the judges leaned toward the Ukrainian 30-27,30-27,29-28 and 28-29,28-29 against. O’Keeffe, a bronze medal winner at the 2018 Europeans, will be taking home silver.

McGovern worked her socks off to cut off the space between her and her rangy Italian opponent, Matia Sannino. Both girls were on target in the opening exchanges and throughout a close final with the Drimnagh BC champion finishing out the first and second rounds well and upping the pace in the third. But the Italian counter puncher got the nod.

Lyndon was on top in the last round – which she won 4-1 – against Paris Smith, but the English light-welter was adjudged to have unanimously won the first two rounds of a very close contest. Big performance from Lyndon who finished the second round strongly as well.

“All of the girls gave everything today and you really can’t ask any more of them. It has been a fantastic tournament for Irish boxing and all of the squad here this week can be very proud of their performances,” said Jennifer O’Sullivan, Irish team manager in Tbilisi with Stephen Connolly.

Eve Carr, Patrick Gallagher, James O’Neill, Martin Donovan, Killian Walsh and Paul Archbold  worked Ireland’s corner in Georgia.

Ireland used a 32-strong squad in the Georgian capital.

The team will be bringing home two gold, courtesy of Kinsella and Adam Olaniyan, six silver and ten bronze from Tbilisi in a record for Irish boxing at this level.

The 2019 collection improves Ireland’s all-time haul since the inaugural tournament at Rome 2003 to 119 medals.

Dom O’Rourke, President of the IABA, hailed the performances of the young Irish team and highlighted the enormous contributions of their clubs and club coaches.

“Our young boxers did their country proud and it is a fantastic achievement by any standard to win 18 medals. Our team managers and coaches deserve enormous credit, he said.

“The quality of competition is very high here but our squad put in top-class performances every day. Great credit must also go to the clubs and the club coaches for their contributions to this success.”
