10 Team Ireland boxers contest European Junior Championship Semi Finals

8 Team Ireland boxers contested the second day of Quarter Finals on Saturday and 10 Irish boxers are gearing up to box Semi Finals today.

In QFs, 44-46kg Alfie Jordan opened proceedings, against Alexandru Censusa of Moldova – he is through to today’s semi finals following a 5-0 win, 30:27, 30:27, 30:27, 30:27, 30:27.

3 bouts later, at fly, Calvin Doyle took on Mihal Daniel Irofte of Romania and is likewise contesting today’s semi-finals following a 4-1 split decision win – 28:29, 28:29, 29:28, 28:29, 28:29. Welter Tadgh O’Donnell claimed a 5-0 win over Armenia’s Agrishti Hakobyan – 27:30, 27:30, 27:30, 27:30, 25:30. Heavyweight Adam Olaniyan met home boxer Vincenzo Guida in bout 14. The decision, in favour of the Italian, proved controversial – Adam gave two standing counts in the first round. Two judges final scores at the end of the three rounds were tied, and judges were asked to choose a winner. They chose the Italian boxer. The final scores were: 29:27, 29:27, 28:29, 28:28 *, 28:28 *.

In Ring A’s evening session, light fly Jamie Collins was second between the ropes, and recorded a RSC R1 over Serbia’s Admir Kamensnicanin. Four bouts later, feather Callum Carragher contested against Azerbaijan’s Mahammadali Gasimzade, and his tournament ends following a 5-0 decision for his opponent – 27:30, 25:30, 26:30, 26:30, 27:30.

Over in Ring B, light bantam John Harty was in action in Bout 4, against Greece’s Kostantinos Sarigiannidis – he boxes again, today, by virtue of a 5-0 win – 30:27, 30:27, 30:27, 30:27, 30:27. Light welter, Cillian Reilly Lennon me Atrmenia’s Marat Mikaelyan – and is also in action again today, following a 5-0 win – 27:29

The tournament, being contested by 353 boxers, is being hosted by the Italian Boxing Federation in Montelsilvano. The competitor nations are: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine

Monday is a rest day and all finals will be boxed on Tuesday.
