Adamus becomes first Irish Boxer to win World Third Level Gold.

57kg Patrick Adamus made history in Turkey today, becoming the first ever Irish boxer to win gold at a World Third Level competition.

Adamus, of Drimnagh BC but boxing for his college, NCI, came to victory by way of a second round stoppage against a home opponent.

Leanne Murphy was unlucky to lose to the French boxer in her quarter final as the French boxer Fatia Benmessahel obliterated all her other opponents and even stopped the Ukrainian girl in the final. The luck of the draw for Leanne…..or unluckyness of the draw in this instance!

Aoibhe Carabine lost in the semi final to the Turkish boxer who then went on to easily win the title against the South Korean boxer. Aoibhe topped off her week with an excellent three rounds of sparring on finals morning with the Hungarian boxer who also was eliminated in the previous round.

Darren O’Connor lost out to experienced international Enzo Grau who is also a World Military Champion. Grau found the pace tough against his Ukrainian opponent and after yesterday’s non stop action against O’Connor, his tank emptied very quickly and he had to play second best to the Ukrainian. Coach, Paddy Gallagher says “A massive week for Darren here in Turkey and the experience will stand him in good stead when he returns to action in the National Championships at home in Ireland.”

Matthew McCole had to bow out of the Worlds with a bronze medal, after having three wins amd remaining unbeaten as a nasty head cut ended his championships. He was favourite to go all the way, like Adamus, and take gold. Coach, Paddy Gallagher, says “The compliments he received for his style of boxing came from many quarters including from some of the IBA chief officials involved running the championships.”

The World Cup includes 6 sports: Boxing, Karate, Muaythai, Sambo, Wrestling and Wushu. It takes place in Samsun, Turkey, from September 21st to 30th. The cup embraces a university-versus-university format instead of national delegations. The tournament ‘s website is here.

Two Irish R&Js qualify as International Technical Officials.

Two Irish R&Js have become International Technical Officials.

Sadie Duffy, of Illies Golden Glove has become one of just four women in the world to qualify as an International Technical Official. Dermot McDermott, of the Curragh BC, has also earned the same qualification.

The IBA has a number of strict criteria which limits the number of people who qualify to undergo ITO training. Sadie, a 3-Star qualified R&J, was selected on the basis of her exceptional past performance history. Most recently, she was named Outstanding Referee & Judge at the Women’s World Championships in Turkey. Dermot was among the comparatively small number of R&Js, globally, invited to officiated at the Tokyo Olympics.

Both took part in the International Technical Official (ITO), Evaluator, Referee & Judge
Instructor course in Assisi, Italy from earlier this month, and have achieved qualification. Sadie and Dermott have also qualified as R&J Evaluators and R&J instructors.

ITO positions include the following roles:
Deputy Technical Delegate
Draw Commissioner
Ringside Doctor
IBA Cut Technician
Referee and Judge Evaluator
Referee and Judge Coordinator
Observer
Equipment Manager

Both Sadie and Dermott can begin activities involved with their new qualifications immediately. The Officer Board of the Central Council would like to extend congratulations to Sadie and Dermott on their wonderful achievements.

Ireland claim 3 bronze medals at FISU World Cup of Combat Sports & Adamus seeks gold up-grade.

57kg Patryk Adamus, of National College of Ireland and Drimnagh BC, makes history today by becoming the first ever Irish Third-Level student to box in a FISU final.

The Cup is a biannual event organised by FISU, the International University Sports Federation, of which Ireland has been a member since 1987.

Patryk won through to today’s final against Turkey following his semi final last night against a rugged Ukrainian boxer. He won the first round convincingly despite getting a cut over his eye following a clash of heads. Despite this distraction, the NCI student continued landing stinging punches in the second but heads clashed on numerous occasions leading to the doctor being called to assess. Eventually the doctor stopped the bout which the referee deemed to come from another accidental clash and with Adamus streaming ahead on the scorecards, he was awarded a unanimous decision. Following the bout, he was taken to the hospital where they put paper stitches on as the cut wasn’t too deep or too dangerous. on Wednesday, his quarter final opponent was disqualified following three warnings for holding in the bout.

On Wednesday, Leanne Murphy from Togher in Cork and a student on UL lost against the French champion in the 66KG quarter final. Despite a gallant effort, the Limerick student couldn’t find the punches to trouble her much more experienced opponent. This is Leanne’s first elite level international championship.

Aoibhe Carabine from Bangor Erris in Mayo and ATU Galway, lost her semi final to a top quality Turkish opponent despite leaving it all in the ring on terms of performance.  She will return home with her bronze medal from her quarter final win.

Matthew McCole won his quarter final on a 4-0 scoreline to claim bronze on Wednesday but in the process, he suffered a cut to his head which required hospital treatment meaning he couldn’t box in his semi final on Thursday night. Three wins in Samsun Turkey  for him was a good championship.

Darren O’Connor from Loughrea and representing University of Galway, was beaten in his semi final by a former world youth champion and seven times French champion. He too goes home with a bronze medal and got three bouts, two wins, one stoppage and an immense amount of experience as this too was his first ever elite level international championship.
